Which is the best set up?
I got my new chrony in the mail yesterday and I got the following calculations with a little testing:
@ 70 lbs and 28 inch draw:
Draw Length / Draw Weight / Arrow Weight / Velocity / KE / Fletchings
28 / 70 / 425 / 270 / 68.8 /Plastic vanes
28 / 70 / 395 / 286 / 71.8 /Feathers
28 / 70 / 374 / 281 / 65.6 /Plastic vanes
28 / 70 / 345 / 292 / 65.3 /Feathers
I know that the KE is enough to blow through anything I could see in Kansas but I thought I would get your opinion anyhow. Thanks in advance.

cbanman,
Dude I' m not one to down a guy' s new toys.........but yeeeeeeeeeeikes.[]
Did you read the directions on that chrono of yours?
(Your original Numbers.....)
28/70/400gr/286fps
28/70/374gr/291fps
28/70/345gr/292fps
Does it make sense in your mind that you only lost 1..........1fps for a weight gain of 29grs from an arrow of 345grs to 374grs?
Even I can do the math on that puppy and thats 1fps/29grs of arrow weight. In a vaccum or on the moon maybe but not here thats for sure.
And the next jump is almost as bad, but doesn' t match the pattern of the first arrow switch...........this one shows a velocity loss of only 5fps for a gain of 26grs in arrow weight . That' s a ratio of 1fps/5.2grs of arrow weight. A little closer to reality but still off the chart for any bow I' ve ever owned.
Usually a ratio of 1fps for every 2 to 3.5grs of arrow weight is normal.
Something is WAY out of whack....and it' s gotta be the chrono or your grain scale but those numbers are unrealistic. Sorry.
OK.......now you edited those original numbers.........I assume still playing? But now you have a reading there where you actually have velocity INCREASING 5fps when you RAISED arrow weight 21grs!?...Ahhhhhhhhhhh You' re killin me here![]
(your NEW numbers)
28 / 70 / 425 / 270 / 68.8 /Plastic vanes
28 / 70 / 395 / 286 / 71.8 /Feathers
28 / 70 / 374 / 281 / 65.6 /Plastic vanes
28 / 70 / 345 / 292 / 65.3 /Feathers
What are you doing to that poor chrono?....and what happened to the 400gr arrow? You aren' t drinking and shooting are you.........if so put down the can and step slowly away from the chronograph.

RE: Which is the best set up?
I thought the same thing so i just went back and rechecked. I had feathers on one and plastic on the other. That may be the dif. I didn' t think that drag made that much of an impact.

RE: Which is the best set up?
you have way more going on than drag!........
Honestly.
Drag is a nonfactor at a couple of feet........
What I think is the factor is a whacky chrono, guessing on arrow weight, or a busted grain scale.
Besides the FEATHERS would actually have MORE drag (even tho they are lighter) but you have that arrow going FASTER with a weight gain.

Have you recalibrated your scale?
Check out the lighting that you are using to crono if doing so indoors, improper lighting will give you false crono readings on some cronos that I know of.

I noticed something wasn' t right also.Like dropping arrow weight but gaining ke.That doesn' t add up.
I have noticed that if you don' t shoot through the chrono at EXACTLY the same place everytime with a pro chrony or some of the cheaper chrono' s that the reading will be a little off.Just make sure all the shots are exact.Including distance from the chrono and position the arrow goes through it.

RE: Which is the best set up?
The arrow that I am using with the plastic vanes also has a different nock. It grips the arrow much tighter then the other. Does this influence arrow speed and explain the results to any degree?
28 / 70 / 395 grains / 286 fps Feathers
28 / 70 / 374 grains / 281 fps Plastic vanes

RE: Which is the best set up?
Of course it does. Think about how much effort it takes to pull that nock off the string compared to the other one. You' re wasting a good bit of your bow' s speed and energy just to get a too tight nock off the string.
