In all honesty, I'm shooting a cheap $10 stabilizer on all 3 of my bows, and I've found that it is just as good as some of the more expensive ones for me, but much cheaper. Take a look at Eastman Carbon Rod stabilizers, or you could just get a Sims S-Coil, which isn't really much of a stabilizer, but it helps a small amount. |
RE: new stabilizer?
Im sorry man....i was in one of those pissed off moods and shouldnt have said anything....please accept my apology.
But seriously you can spend upto 100 bucks on a stabilizer and I honestly dont think they do anymore than a z coil or anyother 20 $ stabilizer. If my bow didnt need a lil shock dampener i honstly probably wouldnt even shoot one. Im not expert target shooter but I can keep grapefruit groups out to 60 yards (on a good day:D) haha. But seriously...id get something cheap if you dont plan on target shooting a bunch. |
RE: new stabilizer?
I've never seen a z coil (maybe I have, but I didn't know it). Can you post a link?
I would recommend thinking about the length of the stabilizer. You probably don't want a 30"er, which is designed for target archery, but you will want one that has enough weight on the end for your bow to fall forward after the shot. You are probably planing to hunt with it, so keep it under a foot in length. It is a lot easier to drag a short stabiliser through the woods than a super long one, plus, some states require that your stabilizer be less than a certain length. In Minnesota, it's a foot. I use the Octane, which does cost $80, but it looks really cool and is just as effective as those specialty stabilizers that cost even more. Check you the link and watch the intro video. It's pretty cool. If you have the time, read this link, it may help you. Choosing the right archery Stabilizer. |
RE: new stabilizer?
I think he means the S-Coil by Simms. Which stabilizer you use depends on the bow, how you use it and what you're after. The stabilizer serves a couple of functions; balancing the bow to stabilize it on target, making it drop upper limb away at the shot (rather than upper limb toward you), and deadening noise/handshock. By adding more weight you're going to make the bow point better. By adding more length (and weight) you'll make it follow through after the shot better and weight along with all the trick add-ons of mercury, sand, sound suppression (Simms, Doinker...) will dampen the shot better. You'll need to pick the combination that's right for you and what you're doing. Personally I like a short, light supression system (Simms S-Coil) for my stalking and mountain hunting but if I were in a tree stand exclusively I wouldn't mind more length and weight.

RE: new stabilizer?
The Doinkers and Sims are great products, but I found that the Octane can match them inch for inch, is cost effective and looks great. The fact that Octane can make such a quality product that can match the bigger names that have been around much longer says a lot about the company. All I am saying is that you cannot rule them out until you try them. You'll know what you like, and it might not be Octane, which is fine. Buy what you think is best.

RE: new stabilizer?
Also, if you ike a certain stabilizer, but you think it is a little too short, you can put extensions onto it. Companies like Bowjax make dampeners that screw into the end of many stabilizers. This may give you enough forward weight to tip that top limb away from you.

RE: new stabilizer?
thanks for all the info. apology accecpted BHB no problem tell me how u feel dont bite around the bush:D. BTW im 16
the stabilizer on my lights out works fine but it is just long and unattractive but i guess all good stabilizershave to be long. thanks for the help -Evan |

RE: new stabilizer?
Wasn't sure. Thanks for the clarification. I like to think I know what products are on the market to recommend the right ones to customers at Gander Mountain. I'm kinda an unofficial employee. I do more bow work the the real employees.

RE: new stabilizer?
You'll hear a lot of opinions about stabilizers, so here's mine.:)Most people feel that for hunting that they need a short stabilizer but if you go to a 3d shoot everyone has stabs that are 30" long. IMO, 30" is way too long to hunt with but there'sno reason to limit yourself to a 4" stab. When I started out I had a cheep 4", then I bought a 7" Doinker thinking that this was about the max size to hunt with. One day while shooting at a buddies house I tried his Switchback with a 10" stab. He insisted that walking through the woods was no problem. That started the experiment, I machined 2 pieces of 1" diameter aluminum rod about 3/8" long. I drilled and tapped a center hole for 5/16-24 then I drilled four holes to accept old arrows, about .296 diameter. Now I can screww my doinker on the end and adjust the overall length by cutting the arrow pieces to size. To make a long story short longer was better for accuracy. I decided to go with 11 1/2" overall length including the bracket for my front mount STS and a QD so it all fits in the case easily. Then I found a guy on e-bay selling 6 sims modular nodes and I won the bid for $36. I put three of them on the end of my homemade extension and they work great, I really did notice a difference over the doinker and with the other three aI made a second stab for my son. As far as it being too long, it's still shorter than the arrow sticking out the front of the bow. When you're walking around in the woods you have have to watch where your arrow tip is, if the stab is shorter it won't create a problem. Just my .02.

RE: new stabilizer?
Octane has an 11.5 inch model that I have been trying to get in Mossey Oak Obsession for a long time now. I put some stabilizer jax on my 7" until the new one comes in.

RE: new stabilizer?
Hey Centaur post a pic of your custom stab. I want to see how you did it -- looks interesting. How heavy is the end weight? I am at 12 in 17oz stinger and I love it. Not a pain to hunt with like I thought it might be.

RE: new stabilizer?
I'm thinking about adding those bowjax that screw into the end of the stabilizer to get to 12" and have more forward weight.

RE: new stabilizer?
If you do decide to put stabilizer extensions on, I strong recommend Bowjax over Sims. I tried them both and there was noticeably less vibration and noise when I switched to Bowjax.

I'm impressed.

RE: new stabilizer?
This company stole my idea and they're selling a stabilizer kit. They supply the end pieces and you supply the arrow pieces cut to whatever length you want.

RE: new stabilizer?
Dude, that sucks. I suppose there is no way for you to prove that they did it. I like the multiple rod design, but I think that there needs to be dampening materials in the rods like many high end stabilizers. I would like to see an octane with three smaller rods in it and the rest of it be the same.

RE: new stabilizer?
Did you try it with bowjax?
|
RE: new stabilizer?
Thats pretty cool but I was refering to the sting/octane stab -- that this is sick
|
RE: new stabilizer?
What do you mean, you were referring to that octane stabilizer?
|
RE: new stabilizer?
My bad -- i think it must have been on AT or something. Some guy took an octane stab and rigged it to put the B-stinger weights on the end of it -- It is pretty sharp looking.

RE: new stabilizer?
If you can, post the picture. I'd like to see it.

how do i add a pic

Click reply.
Below the text box, on the left hand side, there is a link that says click here to upload. A box will appear that says "Select a file to upload:" Click Browse. Select the file of the picture that you want to upload. Its title will appear in the box next to the browse button that you selected. Select "OK." It will tell you if you successfully uploaded it. If so, click "OK." If not, click "Cancel" and go back and shrink the image. |
RE: new stabilizer?
That is another way to post a pick, just include a link. I think it looks cool and might put one on mine if it is available in Mossy Oak Obsession. I would put it on after two Bowjax.
|
RE: new stabilizer?
Thought you might like that
|
RE: new stabilizer?
did this work?
|
RE: new stabilizer?
YAY
|
RE: new stabilizer?
Have you ever seen one in Mossy Oak Obsession? That is my favorite camo pattern. I will not put in unless it is in Mossy Oak Obsession because everything else on my bow is Mossy Oak Obsession if it is camo.

RE: new stabilizer?
Check the b stinger wesite -- im not sure what all they have. I am starting a new thread because it seems only you, me, swamo, moss, country, and dock reply
