Longest Shot taken on Deer
From a reply to pin settings posted 3/8 03. I don,t even know how to word this, and no next to nothing about the NFAA. But my longest shot on a deer was 39-41 yds. But if your pin is set at 80 yds and your scoring ,what would be the longest shot these (pros) or you are taking at deer. Providing there is a clear shot. Always wondered this. And please don,t answer what ever your comfortable with, I would like some yardage from those of you who have taken a Long Distance Shot and SUCEEDED. Thank You.

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
I almost posted this the other day but felt like it would turn into an ethical debate.
My longest is 41 yards. Although I know some guys that have taken some a lot further on mule deer: 1 shot a mulie at 68 yrds 2 years ago.And the other shot a huge mulie this year at 85 yrds. |
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
Personally my longest was a mulie buck at 41 yards. I have maxed my range to be 40 for perfect conditions, but practice up to 60 yards finding this really tightens my groups at 20 and 30 where I have taken most my shots on game. I know of one individual who shot a mulie at 71 yards last fall and another who shot his Bull elk at 68 yards last fall. Both shooter are very accomplished and feel they can easily harvest game at 80 yards, provided perfect conditions. To me that is a bit of stretch even knowing how they shoot, a animal moves at that distance ever so slightly and you have a very poor result. I prefer to shoot under 30 yards and have passed deer that were outside this for one reason or another. The only reason I shoot my mulie was dead calm, broadside looking away, I had the exact range on him and new my pin set was perfect for that shot. The end result was a perfect double lung pass through and watched the buck crash not 100 yards away, howevr I also know that had the wind been up, the position of the animal been altered and not getting a range on him, I would have elected to wait or pass. That is where personal ethics come in, just IMHO.

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
35 yards, I shoot instinctively with my compound and didn' t think the buck was that far. My arrow took out both lungs, but I won' t try a shot that far again unless the situation is as perfect as that one was.

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
My longest kill on a mulie was 58 yds. I did here of one taken in southern AZ this year at 103 yds by a pro shooter.

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
Hi,
This was three decades ago and I was still shooting my recurve. The buck was 43 yards away an drilled him with a Bear razorhead. Normally I would never shoot that far,but the deer stood for over 5 minutes in one spot wide open. |
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
I am very proud to say that the longest ive ever had to take on a Whitetail was 23 yards. :-) I like that record. Allthough, i did shoot a duck at 53 yards. Does that count?
|
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
38&39yds one week apart in the same spot. 40 is my limit, and there are still to
many variables that can make a shot go bad at 40!! Puttem in the K-ZONE,AL:D |
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
45 yards for me, drilled a forkhorn through both lungs, he didn' t go 40 yrds.
|
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
I' ve shot a couple at 40yds but thats not a shot i want to take on a regular basis. I generally practice at 20,30,40,50yds but most of my shots are 25yds and closer and thats the way i like it.

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
My longest was 36 yards on a whitetail. The deer took a step on me at the point of no return on the release. Never thought he would, but did. Turned a double lunger into a gut shot. I ended up recovering the deer about 150 yards away after a very exhausting trailing effort. I will never take this long of a shot again, even if everything seems perfect. BTW, at the time I was using carbon arrows shooting around 290 fps.
|
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
I only hunt whitetails, so my longest is inside 25 yds. Probably about 22. I try to do the homework, so long shots arent needed.

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
I have taken 4 deer with a bow and 3 of them was between 40-44yds. I am comfortable at shooting longer distance. I pratice at 60-70 yards. I did kill a rabbit at 70yds once. It was cool. I guess I just pratice too much. if that is possible. LOL Bowjunkie

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
It was 37 yards for me on a young whitetail doe, with a Bear Whitetail II. The arrow could not have been faster than about 180 fps, and the deer did move, but I still got the liver and it proved deadly.
I still don' t like to take long shots, but if given what I believe is a high percentage opportunity, I will take it. 40 yards would be my limit, though. |
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
I shot a 6 pointer in PA on a gas tank while feeding on grass at 77yds about 8 years ago. Now, I don' t condone shooting this far normally, but I had figured on this type of setup and had a movable sight that was dialed in to 80yds, and corresponding flagging tape tied out on tufts of grass every 10 yds. I was shooting ACC' s with mechanicals, and I had practiced with this setup out to the " full boat" of 80yds and was very confident in the shot, (drilled him actually, went less than 100yds) no wind, deer was calm, never knew what hit him.
This year I took a 4 pt in NH at 46 yds with fixed blade heads, another " Pinwheel" . Same type of setup, only this time I used my rangefinder and a 5 pin sight, and knew that my bow was dialed in at the exact same yardage. Again, I do not feel anyone should take any shot like this unless you are an experienced archer (I' m a former IBO champion and have been shooting over 35 years) and practice long shots regularly, and even at that, if there is any chance that one can wait for a better (closer) shot to present itself, one always should. Both of these shots came as a " last chance" scenario, If I didn' t take the shot I never would' ve gotten one, and they were excellent broadside shots on a stopped animal that was feeding away. Good shooting, Pinwheel 12 |
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
the longest was32 YDS the closedt being 7 yards.
|
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
All the deer I have taken have been within 25 yds. 3 years ago I was ready to take a doe at 38 yrds but she never cleared the brush.
|
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
27yds with my bow.
|
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
My longest shot was 27 yards on a doe that never knew what hit her. Quartering away shot took her behind the right shoulder and out in front of the left shoulder, resulting in a flipped deer and no tracking job. Honestly, I have not had too many situations where I had to decide whether or not to shoot. Most of mine have either been in range or not. Not too many in the 35-45 yard range. But, I have been happy with the choices that I have made as far as shot selection.

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
The longest shot I' ve taken was about 12 years ago in WV on a real nice buck. He was at 33 yards, unfortunately I guesstimated 30 yards. I was shooting a PSE set at 74#, with 30" 2219s and a 160 gr Thunderhead. He was standing broadside and the arrow zipped right under his chest just behind the front legs.
Unbelieveably, he didn' t alarm he just looked quickly in my direction, I was on the side of a tree in a treestand. He didn' t see anything that alarmed him and he just made a left turn on the logging road he had just stepped up onto and walked away. I then had the thrill of watching him work/freshen scrapes as he zigzagged down the logging road. I wanted to take another shot, unfortunately, when he worked the first scrape he was about 43 yards away and the canopy prevented any possibility of an arrow getting to him. It was a thrill though! RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
I took a shot at a doe just over 500 yds running threw a field and hit it threw the head, I will say this it was more luck then skill, but I had three people there to see it.

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
Longest shot I have taken was 50 yards on a mulie buck. Took him through the lungs and he went about 20 yards.
|
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
110 yards scored 10 points 3D target
|
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
With my setups and terrain I never have nor ever will have a shot over 30 yards! It' s why I bowhunt. I' ll keep the longer shots for gunhunting.

RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
LivinonLuck Im going to assume that was just a really bad joke. If not, then I have a tuning method which will take you to the next level. A higher plain if you will, if done right. I think if you practice and super tune just a tad more you could get that range to over a thousand. Im going to tell you a little secret that I dont give out much. Its the little known Ukranian tuning method. What you do is find an open field. Screw on the widest cutting b.h. you can find, something in the way of a two and a half inch cut mech works really well. Also you want a day with absolutely no wind. You need at least two dozen arrows for this and even more works better. I recomend you take a hula hoop and stand inside it. The hoop gives a reference point.Raise the bow over your head and fling those babies straight up. Just as fast as you can, reload and keep em flying. You want as many arrows in the air as humanly possible. What you want to have happen is that arrow reach its peak, swap ends and come straight down. You want no arch what so ever. That arrow should go straight up, stop, swap ends, and come straight down. If your getting arch and the arrows are sticking in the ground outside the hoop, you need to get that bow on more of an even plane with the ground. What does this method prove you ask. I have no idea. I dont think Ukranians know squat about archery, but Ukranian tuning just sounds cooler than French tuning. In your case I see a possible benefit to this tuning method.
Whoops, did I forget to mention once you got all those arrows in the air, for Gods sakes dont just stand in that hoop. That could be dangerous. Hope this helped, and remember Kids dont try this at home. |
RE: Longest Shot taken on Deer
My bad on my last post I was using a rifle not a bow, when I looked after I posted it, I see that everyone is talking about a bow
