2" blazers and helical....

I currently shoot 2' blazers on my axis 400's, I have them fletched with "straight 1 degree" az ez fletch. They fly great for field points, but I have not shot the BH yet out of the new bow. Is the 1 deg ok for BH? should I be using a 4 deg or 6 deg right helical, or does it matter??

I am using the Bohning fletching jig plastic red one and I just bought the right helcal and I love the difference. The helical is slight but it does help stabilize the arrow.

well, Im not sure which one is actually on my arrows. I asked the shop when they did it, he said it was 1 deg, I called today he said he may have used the 4 deg one but he doesn't remember.

huh, how much does it help stabalize the arrow? i shot 31" arrows and have been using the az ezy fletch with just off set straight and have gotten good results..however after changing my string recently, for some reason now i cannot get the BH to hit with the fieldpoints (its about 3 inches to the left). so i just purchased the bohning fletcher online yesterday, only to find out it is back ordered[:@]....but, once i get it i am going to try it out with right helical and 4" vanes...i am hoping the groups will be tighter and the 3" difference will go away.

va I use the ez fletch with the helical arms with blazers and I get very good results with the helical.I am a firm believer that if you shoot a fixed blade broadhead you should be using some deg of helical, the more helical you can get the better for perfect broadhead flight.

On the 2" Blazers, you want to strive for an RH helical offset that amounts to about the width of the base of the fletch. In other words, if you look straight down the shaft, the right edge of the back of the fletching's baselines up with the left edge of the front of the fletch base. Does this make sense?

RE: 2" blazers and helical....

makes sense to me roskoe:D

do you think that for a 31" arrow blazers would work well? or should i opt for a larger vane size?

Roskoe 06-04-2008 08:32 PM

RE: 2" blazers and helical....

It should work regardless of arrow length. The only time the 2" Blazers have let me down was with a 31" CE Terminator shaft pushing a Magnus Bullhead turkey head. For that, I had to use real 5" feathers with a hard helical offset - even 4" plastic veins weren't enough.

RE: 2" blazers and helical....

huh..ok thanks. the shaft is a carbon express terminator lite....small but is an upgrade from the wolverines;)

ALso, I had the same problem awhile back. Bow was shooting BH and field points exactly the same and, once I put on new string/cables, couldn't get them to group the same. After a little break in period, however, I did some major retuning on the bow - twisting cables and strings to restore ATA and brace height, as well as moving the rest and nocking point a bit- and wound up with things grouping the same again. This issue may not have anything to do with the arrows or fletching.

Ever thought about Easton Axis or CE Maxima Hunters?

RE: 2" blazers and helical....

I agree with Roskoe first make sure the tuning with the new string/cables is done and give the new parts time to stretch and "break in" then tune the bow and the make sure your arrows are spined correctly. The Fletching will help stabilize but will probably not completely correct the problems you are having.

RE: 2" blazers and helical....

yes i thought about the maxima's. However my original goal was to get a very light arrow allowing my 7 pin tru glo sight seperation to range from 20-80 yards. Well having a 31" is not a good thing in this instance as i can only get 20-75[:@]. So the maxima's (costing about $50 more per dozen) would give me the same results (got a dozen carbons on ebay for $50) and would not really benefit me. They are better quality, but I don't think shooting them will improve my accuracy enough to justify the cost. do you think it would?

so should I go with say a right helical at 4 deg??

JN Turk - you might be surprised how much better you can shoot with premium arrows. I know someone who went from tennis ball size groups to golf ball size groups just by upgrading from a Walmart economy arrow to a premium one.

Vabowman - I was trying to do the math on the degree of offset on my Blitz, and it comes out to about 4 degrees. That's about the most I can get with the small diameter Axis shafts, and still have good fletching contact all along the base of the Blazer.

RE: 2" blazers and helical....

thanks Roskoe!! I went with the straight 1 deg because I already had 12 arrows done this way so I just did six more, we'll see how they fly with BH!! Oh yeh, I got a question, do you shoot a QAD rest??

Roskoe 06-05-2008 07:58 PM

RE: 2" blazers and helical....

Yes. Was running a Whisker Biscuit last year, and switched to the QAD in December. It's a little faster and a little more forgiving.

yeh I like mine too, but there seems to be a slight clicking noise when I draw is this normal, I always have it locked into place before I draw, but it still clicks on the initial draw and then I don't here it anymore.

in your opinion, do you feel that going from a carbon express terminator lite arrow to an axis or maxima i would have great improvements with arrow flight?

What kind of flight are you getting now?

Roskoe 06-06-2008 11:16 AM

RE: 2" blazers and helical....

I have QAD Ultra rests on all my bow, and none of them click. You may have gotten one with with a faulty locking cam. It's not quite locked when you pull it to the up position, and then when the cord pulls it back the last 1/4" it clicks in all the way?

RE: 2" blazers and helical....

I shoot the 2" blazers with a 2 to 3 degree offset using a bitzenburger.I am using a straight clamp and off setting fletch as far as I canand still remain on the shaft.I have never needed a helicalfor BH's the offsetworks great and is usually what is recommended.

small improvement from the walmart nockoffs, granite i am not professional archer and i am sure my form, torquing my bow, and other things are not helping the matter...but i didn't not see a HUGE difference with accuracy in the arrows that i have now compared to the carbon express arrows.
