Default Peep removal/installation?

So what's the general concensus on this? Do you or don't you NEED a press to install/remove a peep site? I've read several posts mentioning simply using a seperator to get the peep in without the press. Only reason I ask is I'm still waiting on my press and I want to get my Airborne setup (I have everything I need, but the press), and I want to get my G5 out of my Ross, and into my 101st. If it is possible, how difficult is it to get the strings apart?

You can use a seperator but back the limbs off first.

I have a press so when I change them I always press the bow, which makes getting the same amount of strands on each side of the peep a lot easier

I use a press because I have one. I do know someone who has successfully done this a couple times by, first, backing the limbs off about four turns - and then inserting a very small flat blade screwdriver between the two strands of the bowstring. You want to put some bowstring wax on the screwdriver. After that, you put a second small screwdriver in next to it and then start working your way up to larger screwdrivers until the peep can be slipped in between the two large screwdrivers.

Thanks, I have one on order from Dave, but it's taking a while (understandable as he's pretty busy), so I was just looking for options.

I got one of Dave's last year. Works great. Only thing you might consider "upgrading" when it arrived is to find some rubber hydraulic hose that the bolts will slip in/out of easier. I also wound up replacing the ratchet/strap assembly with one about twice as heavy duty. Look for one that is about the same material as an automotive seat belt.

To be on the safe side Matt, I'd definitely use a press.

Dan,

Thanks, that's what I'm going to end up doing. It seems it can be done without one, but why risk it? I may even run down to my local guy here, have him put it in the press for me to put that in.

Dave who?
He makes the Bowmender bow press that's used by many of the members on here.

I bought a Bowmaster's bow press from Cabelas for $39.95 . Works great for small jobs and I also use the string seperator with the press .
