The manufactures say you may gain a few FPS. I shot my bow without STS and was at 284. Shot with STS in highest position: 284. Shot it in the lowest position: 293. My buddy moved his around on his Mathews and it did not change the speed.

You take off the STS and lose 17 fps? That seems like a whole lot of speed loss for an accessory like that.[:-]
As far as IBO, I have 3 bows with 29.5" draw and 60# draw weight.
The one rated 310 IBO shoots a 315 gr. arrow at 298 and a 395 gr. at 270 fps.
The one rated 316 IBO shoots the 315 gr. at 307 and the 395 gr. at 279 fps.
The one rated 330+ (not sure of the exact rating, it is a 2001 bow) shoots
315 gr. arrow at 319 and the 395 gr. arrow at 286 fps.
All of these are with a D loop and catwhiskers or string leeches only. No peep in the string.

I'm not sure why everyone keeps getting confused by this and ignoring my whole statement.[&:]
I stated that: 10 fps gained with STS in lowest position. The other 7 fps or so is from changing out the stock string and I have chrono'd numbers to verify this.
370 gr arrow before new string and STS in lowest postion: 294
370 gr arrow with new string and no STS: 304 or so
370 gr arrow with STS in lowest position: 311
I've tried moving the STS all over the string and without STS and speed is 10 fps slower unless STS is the whole way down.

Read some UNBIASED bow reports, and you'd find that nearly EVERY bow tested was short of the is "expected" IBO rating. Some by quite a bit, some by only a few fps. Hoyt seems to consistently be one of those that is REAL close to what they rated a bow at, as does Bear. I think the one that I saw that was the farthest off of it's IBO rating was probably one of the best selling bows in the country last year, and lots of guys like it, so what does it really mean anyhow. IBO ratings are like the chicks in Playboy, not in your wildest dreams will you ever get one.

Puke,
Low 270's with a 415gr arrow, actually pulling about 29.25, measured, at 72#, with a little string weight. Same arrows on the Trykon mid to upper 270's, could probably tweak 280's but that's about it with a heavier arrow and string weight, with I don't intend on removing. I am about to put some new strings on it, though, and that may help a little, but I'm not really chasing speed as much as consistency anyhow.

What effect does the STS have on the speed of the bow?

Let me state that this was on my Mathews Legacy that I had no change in FPS. In no way am I saying it won't make a difference on other bows.
