Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

I'm going to get a thumb trigger release here soon. Problem is, I know very little about them, I've never used them, never researched them....

I do know that some aren't compatible w/ a d-loop, they hook to the string by pushing it on the string. So, my question is.......Which would be a good thumb trigger release to use w/ a D-loop?

OMG mobow, the list is endless. Carter makes a pile of great ones. Check out Lancaster Archerys huge list of them. The Chocolate line is great. Thinking about one as a back up but I love my Carter Hole Thing 3 I think I once showed you online. It can be used as a thumb or pinky. I use it pinky currently.

mobo,
I use a TruBall T handle. I don't think it's offered any longer though. I'm lookin at the T handle thumb release w/ the talon hook up.

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

Obviously Carter offers pretty much anything and everything you could look for in thumb-release models. I went with a Truball ST-3 (got a great deal on it), and love it! Fits my hand very comfortably and allowed me to develop a more noticable anchor point imho.

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

I am partial to the Carter line and specifically the ones with the I.T.S.

If I were to get serious again, theMini Evolution would definately be one I would love to try.

If you have smaller hands thenCascade Saturday Night Special might do well for you. Marketed by Spott Hogg.

Thanks guys, I'm still looking, but a buddy of mine is letting me borrow his truball Extreme....Anybody know anything about it?

I'm just gonna mess w/ this one for a bit, and see how it works........Still exploring options.

I'll show you my Carter Just Cuz + on the 12th, provided my sight makes it in by then. In fact, I'll bring it and the Connie regardless so that we can let you blank-bale with it a bit at the practice range.

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

The TruBall Extreme release is the same as the Trail Boss, but with a shorter head. They are good releaseses overall. I shot a trail boss for a couple of years, but I prefer the Carter releases. My personal favorite is the Insatiable.

mobow 03-31-2008 08:25 AM

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

Well I've shot the TruBall a few times, and it's decent. Not bad, I love the concept. The trigger pull is too long on it. I've got it set as light as possible. You simply cannot fire it using back tension, the trigger pull is just too long.

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

The TRu-Fire 3D hunter is another to recommend. It can be set for a faster triggering and is very simple to use. The Carter chocolate addiction and addiction lite are also very good with a loop.

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

Don, was that the one whch Paul had with himi at the shoot? I didn't like that one at all for your purposes and how I'd like to shoot a thumb-trigger release... You're right; that one is nothing more than a caliper release that you hold and fire with a thumb instead of index finger.

You'll see my Carter is WAY different; you'll like it a lot better.

mobow 03-31-2008 01:00 PM

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

Yes, Greg.....It is the one Paul had with him. I'm glad he had one, and was kind enough to let me try it.

It only took about 5 shots to know it wasn't what I was looking for. I shot it a couple times, made some adjustments, and shot it a couple more times. It's back in the case, and I'll return it to him w/ my thanks. NOT what I'm looking for at all.

I don't necessarily want one w/ pure back tension, but this one has WAY too much travel in the trigger. There is absolutely NO way you could fire it w/ back tension, the trigger needs to move almost 1/4 inch. You're spot on, it's nothing more than a caliper release fired via thumb trigger.

TFOX 03-31-2008 02:30 PM

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

If that release had too much travel,it probably was adjusted wrong. They are a pain in the but to adjust so it is quite possible it wasn't adjusted properly.

I have the old original design of the Chappy Boss and there is almost zero trigger travel.

I also prefer the Carter's and imo, they are easier to fire properly.

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

I just thought about something, does the truball have the cocking lever,if not, then I agree,it has too long of trigger travel.I have been down that road as well.

No, it has no cocking mechanism......It works identically to a wrist caliper, push the trigger to open the jaws, let go and they close.

You had me all excited there for a second....I was just about to ask how to adjust it.....disregard. [&o]

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

If I'd of known, I would have let you shoot my Carter hunter. Its set pretty light with very little travel. Only thing you got to get past is that it has an open hook which is one of the thingsI like most about it.

Greg / MO 03-31-2008 06:33 PM

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

Matt, if you come down to shoot with us on the 12th, be sure and bring that (I don't know if that's your regular release or not)... We'll let Don shoot all of ours, and I wouldn't mind giving your's a whirl too if you wouldn't mind.

My Just Cuz + is set up pretty much the same way, except mine's three fingers and no rope, but the thumb trigger's exactly the same. Come to think of it, I think I'm going to walk over and do some more blank baling on the off chance my sight comes in the next two weeks and I actually get to shoot that rig!

mobow 03-31-2008 06:35 PM

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

Yeah, that would be cool. I don't have the opportunity to try any of those out, unless somebody I know has one. We have absolutely no reason to stock any at the shop, so the one I order I'm stuck with.

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

Tru ball makes 2 styles,1 for hunter and 1 for competetion. The hunter is junk imo.As you found out,way too much trigger travel but the others are pretty sweet but they just don't fit my hand like a Carter.

Greg has the same release as mine except mine is a Fits Me Too which is just a smaller version of the Just Cuz and mine has the I.T.S system.

I have made the switch to Bt full timeand that is the way to go imo. It's even a little cheaper.[:-]

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

Mine has the I.T.S. system too :)

I tried the Fits Me at last year's Pro/Am and it was just a bit small.

Great releases, that's for sure. I like the looks of their new Sensation; I'd like to give that a try.

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

I have the rope off now, I only use that during hunting season. No I.T.S. system on my release so I can't fine tune the springs but I like how it feels as is. I just need to do some serious blank bailing to keep my TP under control.[&o]

Oops, for some reason I was thinking you had an older model.

I have really small hands and the Fits Me Too is perfect, hell,Bloodcreek couldn't even get his fat fingers through the hole im my release.[:-]

BAM :D

I hear ya... if there's one serious upside on me having to wait for my sight to come in, it's that. I've got everything together for my 3d rig except that... bow, stab, rest, arrows and release.

I've been blank-bailing into my new Spyderweb targets every single day for almost a month now, and am really starting to get the feel for this release. I was telling a couple of my fellow staff buddies that it's really brought back a joy to pure shooting that's been absent for a while. I absolutely love the feel of ... nothing, nothing, nothing... explosion! Not knowing exactly when that explosion is coming is just too cool.

Mobow, I have a 4 finger Carter Choclate Addiction I bought off of Archery Talk, and I could not get used to it. Anyway I am selling it here soon. Let me know if you are interested. It has some scratches from the previous owner, but it has the original package, all the springs, and the wrenches. If you are interested in it let me know. The guy before me stripped the screw to adjust the thumb trigger position, but I contacted Carter and they sent me a new screw.

That is an excellent release.I prefer the kind that Greg and I have but that is a personall thing, not a reflection of the release at all.

I thought I saw you mention you had small ahnds. If tat's the case you wil like the Carter Chocolate Lite better than the Chocolate Addiction. You can set them up basically zero triggr travel and as light or heavy as you want them.

Yes, they are pricey but they are great releases.

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

All the Carters are high, but they are tops imo.

Tru BAll makes some great stuff as well but I haven't found one yet that I like as well.

You can go true bt for about $60 and have a good one,not top of the line but good.

RE: Thumb trigger release 4 use w/ a D-loop??

I would say that before you plunk down the $$$ for a brand new release, you troll "that other site's" classified section and see if you can find a good used one.

A release, especially a Carter, will last darn near forever. A used one with some cosmetic scratches has no effect on the way the release works and will save you probably close to $50 over the cost of a new one.

I have found that trying to find a release that works for you is often times trying to find the right woman. The one you have been lusting after may not end up being the one that works best for you. I have gone through a significant number of releases looking for the one that works best for me, for a thumb trigger, the Carter Insatiable is it. For a pure BT, my Zenith Comfort 3D Plus fits the bill.
