Default Cutting Carbons

I'd really like to get into making my own arrows again, I used to with alumimuns, but since I switched to carbons I haven't.

Is there a cheap way to cut down carbons? I really don't want to buy a high speed cutoff tool, I really don't think that'd pay for itself.

I have a shop full of tools, will anything in a shop work?

You ABSOLUTELY MUST use a high speed cut off wheel to cut a carbon shaft.

There are inexpensive chop saws like this on ebay all the time that people have adapted to cutting carbon shafts and from what I usnerstand they work well.

I have a few different chop saws in my shop, I have a few carbons that I have robin hooded, so I may just try experimenting on cutting them.

I have a mini cut off saw that cost me about $20.
It works like a dream on both carbon and allum arrows

You can also get special abrasive wheels for it but the one supplied does the job, you just have to take your time.

Hey thanks for the link. I think I might run to Cabelas today an pick up some archery stuff, if I do I will hafta order one of those up. I'm sure I'll find alot of uses for it in the shop anyway!

Yep, that's the one I was refering to. Should work pretty well. Just make sure that the blade and shaft are perfectly at a 90 degree angle from each other.

Ausie-guy, I bought that same cut-off saw and I can't make a nice square cut to same my $%. Is there some technique or jig you made to make it work. I made a nice oak jig and mounted it to it and squared it but it still cuts slightly off kilter. Any info appreciated.

Marmax.

I just sit the saw on the bench top load the arrow into the little vice with just enough pressure to hold the arrow then I check the height of the back of the shaft and cut, after cutting I use the little squaring stone that came with my Axis and Superslims to clean the ends up.

The 4 dozen arrowsI have cut I have had 100% success.

On your mini cut-off saw, did you make some sort of jig so you cut your arrows the same length each and every time ? If so, what did you make it out of and how did you make it ? Many thanks

If you follow the link below, you can build your own arrow cut-off saw.
http://www.deerslayer.freewebspace.com/hbarrowsaw.html

I got the idea from this site and made my own version of it.
The things I changed were the mounting of the tool and I made the backstop slide in a rail.

I can make some more, detailedpictures, if you like.
