Say I wanted to get a new bow..and my choices were
A BowTech Old Glory or a Hoyt UltraTec/V-tec C.5....
What would you choose and why? Why is the c.5 better than the equalizer? or why is the equalizer better than the c.5? I know the c.5 well, but have no exp w/ the equalizer. Service is not an issue with either brand for me...looking just for technical merit. No "BT sucks" or "Hoyt sucks" posts please...or other brand suggestions for that matter, as those are the bows I have narrowed down to. OK class...discuss :D |

Jeff.
If you had a 28" drawI would send you my Old Glory to test for a couple of days. Oh hang on I take that back cause once you shoot the OG ya will want it and wont send it back.:);):D I have found the Draw on the OG to be a lot smoother than the Allegiance and the V-Tec but that is just me;) The speed is there also its not as fast as the Alley but not by much;) It holds rock solid on target, no hand shock that I can feel and deadly quite. The OG is also a tack driver when I do my part right. I got a dozen Gold Tips 22 ultra light to try and just in group tuning wrecked 9 arrows[:@]Guess one day I am gonna learn not to group tune.:D |
RE: Say I wanted to get a new bow..and my choices were
Hey, Jeff:
Good to see you back here. I don't know personally, but if you go over to ArcheryTalk, there was a pretty good discussion on that subject. A target shooter named Marcus from Australia was saying that the Cam.5 would get poor nock travel around full draw when the system was not in synch. He explained why a single cam was better than the Cam.5, mostly talking about the NRG cam. He had no experience with the CPS system, or Merlin's hybrids, apparently. He is shooting an Allegiance, and has extolled the virtues in glowing terms. Seems to be a big fan of the Equalizer system. For me and my limited experience, I shot Frank's OG, and really liked everything about it except for the little hump before letoff. That might have been worse, since his draw is 1.5" longer than mine. Shot feel, quiet, vibe, all were as good as any bow I'v shot. Also, the only Binary bows I've seen with the dreaded cam lean have been the Defenders. The Hoyts do thump a little more, but are very quiet. They peak too late for my taste, but maybe not yours. I also think the Hoyt system is more prone to serving wear on the power cable, not to mention that you would need new string/cables where you could actually shoot the ones that come on the OG. I try to pay attention to this stuff, but personally, I'm happy as a clam with my 40" ATA, 7.5" brace, 311 IBO Tundra!:D |
RE: Say I wanted to get a new bow..and my choices were
Not trying to start a bashing thread or anything, but it seems as if Bowtech has solved their limb/limb pocket problems this year. That being said, I went from a Liberty to a Protec with spirals, and they both feel dead in the hand, are whisper quiet, and have no vibration. I have shot an Old Glory and found it to be the same. I'd say the cam and a half would be better if you wanted adjustability of the draw without switching cams. But I'd also be willing to bet that the Old Glory was a bit faster.

I am deciding between the same two bows as you are. This thread could be interesting.:D

RE: Say I wanted to get a new bow..and my choices were
I'm glad to see that you may be returning to bowhunting after your recent implied hiatus. I take it this thread means you sold the Switchback.
One thought that comes to mind and has already been mentioned is the cam & 1/2's adjustability. Seems like this option would help you sell this bow by opening up to a larger buying base than a cam that is draw length specific. Aside from that I know nothing of the two bows except those who own them love them. I too will be watching this thread to see where it goes. I've often wondered how the two cam systems compare to each other. |
RE: Say I wanted to get a new bow..and my choices were
I wanted a Ultratec so bad for the last two years. Well, this year I finally got a new bow. I narrowed it down to the Ultratec, Allegiance, and the Switchback. After shooting all of them I bought the Switchback. I thought the Ultratec was the worst of the three. That is just my opinion. The Ultratec was a nice bow. Not what I expected. I liked the Allegiance also, but decided on the Switchback because it was 100 bucks cheaper than the Allegiance. The Ultratec is more adjustable, but to me that is its only advantage. I should have shot that Old Glory, I bet its a very nice bow. Good Luck!!

RE: Say I wanted to get a new bow..and my choices were
No "BT sucks" or "Hoyt sucks" posts please...or other brand suggestions for that matter, as those are the bows I have narrowed down to. :D....sorry but you were just beggin' for it with your original post. My opinion? I do like the E-cam over the Cam.5 for the very advantages that it is advertised for. I think having both cams slaved to each other makes alot of sense. Tuning the Old Glory was a breeze initially. I haven't touched the cams since I started shooting the bow. They are slightly out of time, maybe an eigth of an inch, but still in synch with one another. For next year's version of it though I would like a slightly wider valley and some type of rotating modular or replacement modular draw length adjustment system on it. I tinker with my draw length too much to settle for a cam design that doesn't offer much in that regard. I have no means to measure nock travel but considering how easily the bow tuned both with fieldpoints and fixed blade broadheads I cannot imagine that is is much of an issue. Hope this is what you were looking for. |

They both suck. |
RE: Say I wanted to get a new bow..and my choices were
I went through the same situation. I ended up with the Hoyt Vtec for a couple of reasons, one was how the bow felt in my hands, the 2nd was how adjustable the cam and a half is. The bowtech is nice, but not as adjustable and since I like to play with stuff the Hoyt was the natural choice for me. So far it's been a nice bow, super quiet, fast, easy to shoot etc. If I ever get time I am going to write up a review on it, my first attempt at a bow review, but it won't be as long or boring as someone else's I used to read;)

I take it this thread means you sold the Switchback. anyhoo....Sale is pending on the SB...I'm waiting on payment...but I'm startin to get a little worried I won't be getting it. Regardless, the SB is too much bow for the time being since I basically have shot only 30-50 arrows in the past year. I need something a bitmore forgivingto get back into the groove with....SB is not nearly as easy to shoot as the OB was. |

RE: Say I wanted to get a new bow..and my choices were
Jeff,
I shot the 2005 models of both the Ultratec and the OG this past spring. One difference is the grip. Very different on these bows. Of course, you can change either once you buy it, so that is not really a big factor. The draw on both was smooth, but different. They peak differently, so it isa matter of personal feel. The c.5 adjusts, the EQ does not. In my limited testing, the EQ was more efficient. Better energy transfer using different arrow weights. Bottom line, I liked both. I ended up with the OG for 2 reasons. 1) it was $200 cheaper than the Hoyt (really, it was) and 2) the Bowtech dealer is just better. I have never looked back. I love that bow. I am shooting better than I ever have. JMAC |
RE: Say I wanted to get a new bow..and my choices were
Hey JeffB....I guess I'm one of those idiots that buys a new bow every year but what the heck you can't take it with ya.:D:D
Seriously though I do switch bows alot and I make sure to try and shoot everything out there before I do and you won't go wrong with either brand..I don't have any experience with the OG and never shot it because it is longer ATA than I like. I did however have the X-Tec which is similar to this years V-Tec and I loved it. I had no problems out of the c.5 system and it shot extremely well. Smooth draw,Soild wall,No hand shock, and very quiet. I have shot Hoyts for the last 4 years because I just wasn't picking up anything that really caught my attention or shot as well. Until this year I switched to Bowtech...I am not a pronounced Bowtech Man but this new Allegiance I got is very sweet. The new equalizer technology had me interested and is why I decided to try one this year. It might not be quite as quiet as my Hoyts were but man is it a shooter. I shoot this bow better than any I've owned. It has a nice consistent draw IMO and avery soild back wall. I notice very little hand shock and it is blazing fast. I have a short DL and have never owned a hunting bow that shot over about 265-270. Well this one is pushing it out at 305-308 or so. Its just kinda neat only using one pin out to 30yds. Well just my 2cents...Good Luck with your decision...:):D |
