Post-Migration Tech issues

Welcome to HuntingNet on it's new servers! We've had a few hours of downtime, but the entire site has now been moved to new servers. Hopefully things will be a little bit more snappy, and as a tech team we'll be able to respond to new tech issues more quickly in our new environment.

As with any major change like this, it's inevitable that there are going to be some quirks in the first few days. Please post any tech issues you find in this thread, which we'll be monitoring to try to keep on top of anything that's not working.

Happy hunting. :)

HuntingNet Tech Team

The pages are taking FOREVER to load if they load at all.

What he said. It's just crawling along at a slow rate. It really does take forever for a page to load. Navigation a chore...not fun. It's like being on dialup again.[:@]

We're seeing that too, and trying to get it cleared up. I'll post back later today with an update.

So it looks like we've narrowed down the performance issues to one of the two internal subnets that the site uses, which means things would be pretty intolerable for about half the users, which isn't how we'd like things to be. Our network team is working on a solution for this -- I'm not sure how long it's going to be before it's fixed, but they're working on it, and hopefully it won't be that long.

BTW, chat should be working now. It was working when we staged the site on our servers pre-migration, but somehow the database connection got fouled up when we did the final transfer yesterday.

I couldn't get in earlier in the day because I clicked on the favorite that takes me to the HNIhome page. I can't get there by going to Huntingnet.com either. I guess the only way for me at this point is to search HNI and then click on forums rather than the home page.

I really do appreciate the admin update and response to my post. I'm sure others are having problems, well they told me they are but haven't posted here as it's a place they don't come. A couple times today I thought it was getting better so someone must have been trying to tweek the "subnets", although I find it hard to believe that's the problem. But now it's back to broke so tell them to turn the antenna a little to the left and try that.[&:][8D]

We're still working on it, sorry it's been such a bother the last couple of days.

I have it bookmarked to the forums now so it is OK for me. I used to go straight to http://www.huntingnet.com/which took me to the home page then I could go wherever I wanted to go which was the forums 99% of the time. If someone does a search like google for Huntingnet.com and clicks on the results a page comes up saying the site is undergoing maintenance. If they click on the different depts they get the site.

What browser and internet means are you using. Mine is zipping right along and I haven't had a single issue on speed.

I wonder if it'd help if you logged out, deleted your cookies and cache and logged back in. I've heard word that some where still being redirected to the old server because of cookies directing you to the old location?

I have:
Deleted all cookies 2X
Emptied cache 2X
Reset my Cable Modem and wireless router both 2X
I use Earthlink via Roadrunner
I'm using a Mac that uses Safari as a browser!

I do not have problems with any other sites on the web and never had a problem here until the switch! Like I said it takes forever to load a page and sometimes just loads a blank page !

Yup, deleted cookies and all that. That really never does work very often. LOL It's not taking 5 minutes, but it sure is slow. Only place on the internet to be that way. I mean, it's just limping along.

Still having loading problems. I believe the loading problems have to do with the browser I am using, which is Safari. The other day I went to hunting.net on a Firefox browser and it seemed to work just fine. So browser compatibility with the new servers might be a problem.

We're still working on this thing. Are you having trouble in both the forums and the articles part of the site? Or just one or the other?

Our monitoring is showing better performance in the forums than the rest of the site, but that's partly because there's just lots of code on the pages in the other parts of the site. And on the site's homepage, we're intermittently seeing some slow page loads. But any detail you can add from your experience is helpful.

We've been digging into our network and some of our ISP's policies, but unfortunately it can take some time to sort out intermittent issues like this. Thanks for your patience.

For me the Home page and the forums load very slow!

Still way slow to load over here!

RE: Post-Migration Tech issues

I am getting very inconsistent performance, it may be what is outlined in this topic, but I can't get these pages to load.

I will get, about 1/2 the time, the page to load very quickly. The other half the page doesn't load, the status bar at the bottom never fills and the indicator at the top shows its trying. If I refresh, stop and re-click or just re-click the link in question, many times it then loads instantly.

I have tried waiting random amounts of time, I've gone as long as 2 minutes waiting for the page, then re-clicked the link and poof, it loads instantly.

I'm not one to complain usually but since you guys changed servers it is taking an extremely long time to load each page and every time I change forums I have to login again because it tells me I am logged in as a guest even though each time it says "login successfull". I really hope you can get this straight because I love this site but I have not been on here much the last few days because it is TOO frustrating. Thanks for listening.

RE: Post-Migration Tech issues

We realize that the site slowness is a growing frustration for many of you, and we're doing our best to get to the bottom of it. We haven't seen anything yet that would explain it, but we'll keep digging till we get it resolved. Wish I had more to report, but that's all I have right now. If we haven't gotten this resolved before then, I'll post tomorrow with another update.

Guys.. you would be better going back to the old servers until you can work out the problem. In many cases, having pages load at slower than dail up speed justisn't cutting it.

This afternoon there were some unauthorized uploads to the HuntingNet servers which created re-directs on some pages on the site. Since the migration, we have been systematically activating security processes. As a result of today’s incident, we’ve gone through an emergency release to finish faster implementation of those processes, so we shouldn’t see a recurrence of the types of unauthorized redirects (and other page funkiness) that was happening this afternoon. Sorry for any inconvenience this might’ve caused anyone here.

Chat Room seems to be down as it tells me Invalid Username or Password.

I did have it saved as a cookie to which I deleted all cookies. Still the same problem.

I sent a PM to a known Chat Moderator and they confirmed they are also having the same problem.

That was as of yesterday 1-21-09 and it is still the same today.

I'm glad things are working a bit better for you guys. Please keep us updated in the next week or so as to how things are looking for you.

Occasionally sites are slow in certain parts of the country/world after a site migration because of ISP/network issues, but at the same time, I'm not certain that ISPs are to blame in this case. We haven't been able to find anything on our end that would have caused the site to respond slowly for you, but it's still possible we missed something on our end. We'll keep poking through our network for any irregularities in the meantime, just to make double sure that we're not the problem.
