Default Taxidermist loses rack ?

Heres the story.A friend of mines father had a whitetail rack from the 1940s.It was a perfect 10 that scored 160 with no deductions. One day he decided to have a shoulder mount done at a local shop.He leaves the rack there and finds a cape there for it to.About 6 months later he gets a call asking to bring in the rack hes next on list.Comes to find out either someone stole it out of his shop or he just plain lost it.Being upset but understanding he settled for a different rack 15pt. done free of charge. My question is what recourse does a hunter have if his taxidermist loses his trophy of a lifetime and isnt that understanding?Has anyone ever heard of this happening do tax. carry insurance for such an occurance. If so how do you place a value on ones trophy ?

There’s no one answer for all situations. It’s up to the taxidermist and the customer to come to an agreement. The monetary value of most racks is very minimal. The sentimental value can’t be replaced. It doesn’t happen all that often, and can usually be avoided by proper record keeping. But, people make mistakes.

this is why i keep my racks at my house until the taxidermist is ready to mount it. i've seen 2 shops burn down near me that were full of customer trophies. my taxidermist is one of my best friends and i still do this. his shop was one of the ones that burned.
