How to preserve mounts in garage??
#1

I have 4 mounts (Elk, Mule, Whitetail, Antelope) that have all been kept in our house and in great condition, until we just recently moved to NE. The house we bought is nowhere near big enought to fit the elk mount inside. So I hung him in our garage. It is not heated or cooled and it gets kind of humid in the summer. What can i do to protect it, or will it be ok as long as i keep the mice away from it?
Appreciate any advice!

Humidity will be your worst enemy. The high heat inside of a garage might cause excessive shrinking too. You might get some cracking around the eyes and mouth. Not much you can do if it has to be in the garage. It will be more prone to getting the little moth larva that eat the roots of the hair, making it fall out too. You could probably spray for those.
Do you have a pro shop or sporting goods store in the area that might be interested in displaying it? If it were my mount I would find a way to get him inside a heated and cooled house, or store. Life in a garage will not be kind to your elk!!![&o]

Between dermestid beetles and their larvae (present everywhere) and the moths he just mentioned, its hard to protect mounts left in that environment. Trophy care kits from "over the counter" wont work either. A few exterminator specialists might be able to give you periodic short term protection. In many areas garages are just not suitable for these mounts.
