What would be the max distance you would recomend for fat shafts? The max distance I would shoot would probably be around 40 yards.

Ummmm, I dunno.......150 yards maybe? Why not? Will a cross wind effect them more? Yes, a little. But the fat shaft is just as accurate otherwise. There's no reason I can think of to not shoot them as far as any other arrow.

OK thanks. Now what fletchings should I put in them? Vanes or feathers? What lenght? I'm thinking on getting Victory Xringer HV.

If you're going to shoot any sanctioned "Hunter" class IBO shoots you NEED 4" fletching.
You can use short stuff in any other class.

I suggest vanes because they don't drag as much, and if you plan to use 4" my next suggestion is the lighter "Low profile" 4" style that you can get from Duravanes, or the tougher more expensive FLP400 Flex Fletch.
They are lighter, less drag prone and behave much like a smaller vane yet conform to the equipment regulations.

If you plan to shoot a more advanced class like MBR, Open, etc small vanes are the rule. Duravanes, Flex Fletch, Bohning X-Vanes etc.
small stuff for skinny arrows, on up to something in the 2.25-2.5" range for the fatter shafts.

I was thinking of going with 4" low profile vanes.

How many lines can you honestly say you caught because of them? Remember that fat shafts can only give you 1/2 their diameter of an advantage which usually equates to around to 1/32".

I can honestly say I lost no pointstoday because of thin arrows.

I can also say that when I shot longer stakes in the past that fat arrow cost me more points than I gained with them.It takes more energy to keep fat shafts stable at distance than it does thin shafts.I shot a low energy setup and open class.

If you are looking at a 40 yard max with a normal energy setup, fat shaft might get you a point or 2.Especially when playing the 12 ring game.
