good hunting dogs? birds, deer...whatever?

Pure site hound no sense of smell-if it runs a greyhound will chase it so they are used primarily for 'coursing' animals. Lots of guys in the midwest use them for rabbits and coyotes. Doubt if you could get one to hunt birds or retrieve.

I've heard the same thing... no nose, strictly sight hound. I've never actually heard of anyone that has hunted with one tho?

chasing small game in open country is their forte' but i dont think they have been bred for hunting for quite awhile since hardly anyone does. i find hound hunting strange anyways, the dog will probably hunt but he will hunt for himself and by himself, not for or with you. not much in it for the handler i dont think.

greyhounds are great fun tohunt w/. They wont flush and retrieve something you shoot like a bird dog will, they capture and kill it, then bring it back to you. They are awsome to watch run down a rabbit or coyote(use 3 plus dogs). They do have a good sense of smell(nothing compared to hounds of course) but their instinct is to follow their eyes, not their nose. If you get one off the track be carefull letting them loose at first as they dont understand that life off the track has obstacles like fences, we turned our first four out on a coyote along side a county road and they took off after him and he went through the fence and three of the dogs hit it at full speed, breaking their necks, dead instantly. Pretty shocking, but I guess they went out w/ their boots on so to speak, better than spending life in a tiny crate at the tracks.
