Default would a lab make a squirrel dog?

i thought about this after my other post but could a lab be trained to sniff out or fetch squirrels as well as birds?

i am sure they would fetch squirrels. my buddy has a black lab and its prty hyper except when we get under the camo blanket for waterfowl. but it will fetch prty much anything that falls outa the sky. i bet if u shot a squirrel and gave it to him and he picked up the sent he would go find it.

Labs will do pretty much anything you take the time to teach them. If you believe that statement then you can teach your lab to hunt squirrels.

Growing up, we had a smal lab mix. Ole' Sarge was the best damn squirrel dog a hunter could ask for. He was very patient in the woods, until he saw or heard a bushy tail. He would start a very light whimper. When you shot, he knew by the muzzle direction which way the squirrel was. Many times he caught the squirrel before it hit the ground. He eventually became deaf, I think from muzzle blast.

About 8 years ago, a family friend saw a dog alongside of the road, hit by a car. Sure enough, it was Sarge. He had never left the yard before, even if the gate was open for days. This particular night, he wandered out. He was hit and killed alongside the road less than 1 mile from the house. I guess he knew when it was his time...

We all miss Sarge. It hurt Dad the most. It was only the second time I ever saw him cry (the first was when his father died 20 years earlier).

Love Thy BEST Friend EVERY minute.

They have the tendancy to get to our hearts more than we realize until they are gone. I dread the day my Lady leaves us.

Not saying it cant be done but your best of starting with a dog bread for treeing squirrels. Curs and Feist make the best squirrel dogs and will still tree a possumn or coon at nite. I love feist, smaller than curs. Check this site out, but be sure to post and ask LOTS of questions before buying a dog or pup (if you do). There are always those puppie mills selling off junk.
