Gun dogs are not going to catch a coyote. If you let a wirehair loose with hounds running something. There is apt to be a fight. I speak from experience with this.
Stag hounds can and do catch coyotes. But they tend to loose interest when the game gets out of their line of sight.
Your friend with the hounds needs to recruit a few riflemen and post them. This actually works well and is a lot of fun.
