Default Getting a retired dog back into action?

I helped my buddy pick up a 4 year old Chocolate lab
Owner 1- trained and waterfowl hunted the dog for 2 years then got hurt and couldnt hunt so he became a family dog

owner2- Also got hurt and couldn't go out so for 2 more years the dog did not hunt.
we did a couple small retrieves in the yard and the dog did good but the argument is whether we should get the dog back out there and basically slam him back into retrieveing or should we gradually upgrade and do some training before we push him back out to the duck blind... your suggestions please...

Answer seems pretty obvious. Work him back into it, what were the injuries?

The dog cannot be expected to do things it wasn't trained to do.
How far along in training was the dog when it was retried ?
