I actually have no idea what food costs. My wife and I show and breed dogs andI want every edgeI can get on health, so I always buy a premium quality food that is recommended by the Whole Dog Journal. A few extra dollars on food is nothing compared to vet bills; plus, I hate the daily job of picking poop for 14 dogs! The less poop, the better!

Currently, we're feeding Royal Canin because we (and the WDJ) think it's a good food, it's readily available, and they have a pretty good breeders program. But everyone has to make their own decisions on what to feed their dog.

IMO dogfood doesn't make the dog. My dogs get co-op dog food and all the table scraps they can handle, but they get out to run every day. When it comes time for hunting season they are in tip top shape, and will handle all the birds and coons they can get.

I don't think there is a dog food anywhere around here that costs $1.00 lb. Most of the real good dog feedaround here are less than $28.00 for 50lbs.

Royal Canin makes great breed specific foods. I know a labrador breeder that I have gotten two dogs from in Northern Illinois and she is a rep for Royal Canin. I currently feed my dogs Nutro Herring or Venison and they love it. Many of the better foods have glucosimine and you feed les and pick up less crap. You get what you pay for, I have a friend with a lab that is 10 years old and it shows, the breder mention had one the same age but looks 5 years younger!!!
