How Old is Too Old for Stud?
I have a English Pointer that will be 10 yrs old in July, what would you consider to be to old for studding? He has many champions and some hall of fame dogs in his pedigree, this dog was very easy to train and has a great nose and style. I was considering looking for someone with a dm that would be compatable for choice of litter. Any thoughts?

I think the only way to know is to make sure the dog is in good health all around with his heart, etc., then just see if it works. If pups aren't born in 63 days, it probably didn't work. If you got pups in 63 days, then the dog was not too old.

I have a 5 1/2 tr old Springer that successfully mated last Fall.
Prior to their time to be spent together...I talked to my Vet and also did some research on line about the mating process since neither myself or the owner of the female had done this before.
I found most of the info I needed and I also discovered that most breeders will put a stud male "out to pasteur",
when he get's to be 9-10 yrs old. That's not to say that age is etched in stone butmore or less determing that
sperm count at that age lessens significantly. I also found that males 2-5 are the perfect age for mating.
Good Luck!
