RE: Lets see Your Dogs On Point
I just ran across this pic of Casey's first point. He was a few days less than 12 weeks old. Admittedly, it is a sight point, but he held it for 37 seconds. The Grouse is straight out in a line from Casey's nose -- the bird is just barely on the other side of the fallen tree.

RE: Lets see Your Dogs On Point
Nice looking dogs Dale, the Boykins, are they a type of spaniel? I have never seen one, or I do not think I have.
|
RE: Lets see Your Dogs On Point
The Boykin Spaniel native to South Carolina was bred by hunters during the Early 1900's to provide the ideal small breed dog for upland bird and waterfowl hunting along the small creeks and swamp areas.

Definatly find a puppy that will suit your needs as well as suiting the needs of the dog. My Setters make great house pets however, they have alot of drive. They will eventaly go hunting with or without you so you just can't turn one loose to run around in the neigborhood. I like for my children to go to homes were they will be hunted and cared for. I do not sale to folks or plantations that will put one of my dogs in a kennel and leave them alone untill time to hunt sometime next season.
I spent alot of time findingall the thing i wanted in a bird dog and pet. I think the things we all see in great dogs clean in the kennel easily house broke does not eat like a wild beast loves people and wants effection never growls or barks at someone Non aggresive to other dogs willing to please you not doing something for fear of punishment easily learns has intelligence you can see in their eyes Some Things that make a great bird dog THe NOse style bottom and drive (how many people actualy own a all day bird dog) Bird sense (something mom and dad have to put there) everything else can be learned to a degree Training and opertunity is one of keys to success http://www.gundogsbirddogs.com |

You might want to consider a Llewellin setter. There are subtle differences between a Llewellin setter and an english setter. A Llewellin setter are more traditional hunting dogs. They range closer and pace themselves. They have thebird drive and nose as an english setter; largely due to the fact that almost every english setter has some Llew blood. There are a few kennels out there that are producing trialing Llews - and winning trials, but the majorityof them are still foot hunters. |

RE: Lets see Your Dogs On Point
I don't really like to knock Setters on anything they have a hard enough time as it is competing against all the Pointers.
I don't know all the history on Llewellins, but this i do know. They are English Setters andgot there name from a breeder who only bred his dogs. The breeding was just about ruined by this. any time you don't go outside your kennels and bring in new blood you come up with inbred goofy dogs. a True Llewellin is still today a goofy dog they have no style, no bird sense, and absolutly will notgo far enough to win any field trial. Alot of folks think that any tri-colored Setter is a Llewellin. this is False Setters come in different variations of color Black and White Orange and White Light Orange refered to as Lemmon Tan or Chesnut colored or they can be a combination of all or some White is mostly predominate I have only had to register one Setter as being black with white ticking Shewas a Southwin Mike Bitch and as nasty of a dog as they come. Unfortunatly The American Field is in control of the English Setters and Pointers.American Field Trials are a crock of @#$. It has gotten so far away from what it used to be i will not partcipate nor hold anymore Trials for them on my grounds. If you take the field just keep up with who is winning and who is judging. Notice that the amature owners of the dogs are judging the open events and the Hadlers and open dog owners are judging the amature events. Just see who won the open and next week i bet that judges dog wins the amature. This is why the American Field is dying and no one is stepping up to help. The Handlers and the Owners do not want you in. The clubs however, want your money. The Magazine wants you to register and buy pedigrees and advertising. How did we let a magazine get so much power as to dictate evry aspect fromwho gets a Championship trial (of coarse if you don't run an ad in the field your trial does not count) to registering so called pure bred dogs? |
