Never heard of private treaty breeding. That being said I know a few outstanding breeders that reserve the right to approve any breeding that is to take place if you want to use thier kennel name in the registering of you dog. If you named you dog like Deep Run's Alf for example.
It's a particular breeder/kennel reputation at stake and don't blame the good ones from taking such preempted precausions.

Private Treaty Breeding can meen sevaral differt things.
Ofren it refers to a breeding between a champion stud and a leased female
or stud fees have not been paid and pups sold are retained by stud dog owner
either way best advice on buying a pup or started/finished dog is getting paperwork when monies are exchanged
