ive been having problems w/ him not pointing, he just likes to bust in on birds. now he doesnt get on birds too often so that might be part of the problem. but today was a little different. this pic is of him smelling a quail and putting the brakes on. it wasent in much cover so it took off so he didnt get a chance to hold very long, but long enough for me to snap a pic from my phone. now his tail isent up but ill work on that later for now im very happy w/ this.

Great pics.

Do you train with any "captive" birds? (pigeons, quail etc?)
Does your dog retrieve birds?

Doc E, yes and no. when he was younger i used planted quail. well not really knowing what i was/am doing i was letting him find them and chase them. well not knowing a pen quail only has a few flights in him then its done well he caught them. well now i am wondering if that is the other part of the problem.
so now im trying to get him on birds he cant catch. or if penned birds if they take off i will take him another way so he wont bust them again. then also i dont get the chance to get him on birds that often but that is going to start changing now so we'll see how he does.

yesterday when we started he was just running wild w/ no objective, he was running w/ his nose to the ground but then he busted a bird then he chased it a bit then i called him back and he went to where it was and changed his whole system. he was smelling around then he started working and hunting w/ his head up high and really using his nose. i was really proud of how we ended the day. so i feel i just need to get him on birds more and more.

i also have been taking so much time doing yard work the past 2 months and its really paying off, he is starting to listen to me so much better out in the field. i just have to keep up w/ the hard work and i think ill end up w/ a great dog.

For dogs that love to retrieve, the reward for holding a point is getting to retrieve the bird. If they break point or bust (flush) the bird, the reward of a bird in the mouth is not allowed.
You need to do "Whoa" training - Whoa isn't for pointing training, but it is for firming upan establishedpoint. You need to be running the dog on a long check cord. Pigeons make good birds for initial pointing training. Carded pigeons or pigeons launched from a box launcher work very well.

thanks Doc, my problem w/ the check cord is this. i do have a 100 ft one which is huge but still he will go to the end of it and just pull, i will then yank and switch and go the other way he will just keep going to the end. no matter how many times i do it. so i need to find a way to fix that also any tips?
w/ whoa we have been working on it the past month, its coming along slow but its coming along but thats all just in yard training
