RE: pics of todays training
for e collar i use TT G60sport
while yard training i use a choke chain and out in the field w/ the check cord i just hook it up to his normal collar i think thats the one your talking about right? |
RE: pics of todays training
You need to be using a "Pinch Collar" instead of a Choke Chain Collar both in your yardwork as well as at the end of your long check cord.

RE: pics of todays training
i was thinking that also fact someone else said that to me also. Doc do you know of any articles on how to use them? or is it pretty much like a choke chain
and thanks by the way |
RE: pics of todays training
Doc is correct...If you can find a pinch collar that will do the trick. He will not hit the end of that 100ft lead very many times when he is about to hit the end of the cord do you give him directions to turn? Check cording can be a very effective tool when working on quartering. The pinch collar will not hurt him just teachs him that when he approaches that distance he will get a pinch when hitting the end. The other thing like you and I have talked about is yard work and how important Whoa is....you need to be able to stop him, turn him and call him to you. ....Remember he is still a pup. He will chase when he smells bird he will point. When he goes to take a step whoa him. If he persists set him back and have some one flush the bird and don't let him chase...

RE: pics of todays training
You need to find someone in your area that KNOWS how to train and is willing to help you, now. No little equipment change is going to be the silver bullet here. Many of the things you are have done and are doing are causing faults that if continued will make correcting them in the future almost impossible.

RE: pics of todays training
PA Whew, my comp, got messed up by lightning last week, sorry not been around.....Here are a few "things" to maybe help get you by...Dont let him go back to where the bird was, because it makes him, unsuccesful, and will work on creating a bad habit later. If you set him up and you know there is not a bird where or closs to where he is pointing, keep walking...you look at the dog, ALL over....then walk to where the is for sure.....take another look at the dog, you will see the difference, there are or will be physical changes between a and b, tail diff, face diff, foot up, no sort of questionable look. This will teacch you ...what and why. 100ft. is waaaay to long, its an accident waiting to happen...for yourself, how many times has he wrapped and dropped you like a bad habit??:DTake and shorten to 25 or 30, tie a couple knots in.....so when he takes off, you can let slide threw your hand, and grab the knot.....What it sounds like is that the build between you and him, is not strong...meaning, hes hunting for him, and not you. Thats why the points are slim, no respect for the bird, or dad. Man I wish you could come for a day or two, typing sucks!! Pinch collars you can go to Dave Walker Dogs, Dave sells them I also have a connection in arizona that makes them, and I am trying to do some myself, threw some amish people here. I have access to a dvd, that I will copy and get to ya, its 6 hours, but it goes from a to b. You will here and see, alot of the stuff we discussed over the last few months....there are parts in it that the wind, makes it hard to hear, but you listen and pay attention, man there is stuff there that will always kick in on dog training, some where in the proram. It will take a little to get the stuff rolling, so just be patient.... Myself, no more birds........is it making better....nope, sounds worse. You are at a stand still, because until we can start teaching more, the dog is ruling the roost on the birds, and you being green, can possibly make it a major ordeal to fix. You will be suprised what K9'S LEARN WITHOUT BIRDS. You can let him run and try and hunt, no birds, and a cc on the neck. I know you are going uuuughhh!! but it is gonna be alright, promise. You tie 2-3 knots at the end, or halfway down the cc...for your own leverage, cut the thing in half. Do your yard work, out in the field, make him pay attention to you, and where you want to walk, work on soem here's, turning, use 8-10 ft, of the 25, timing is everything, you got to show while you teach. You still got my #, call. I know this doesnt make sense, but it will!! So patience grasshopper!! Later Jonesy

RE: pics of todays training
These folks are most likely right. I did the exact same thing with the
choke collar trick and I would never use it again. What happened to me was my dog came back behind me and made a lot of slack. Before I could tighten it up she bolted right in front and broke the choker. She let out a little yelp and kept on going. So I called the kennel and was told birds, birds, and more birds so when she found out she could not catch them the point would be natural to her. Well this never worked try as hard as I might this still didn't work. So I was teasing a cat with a laser pointer and she took after it. Being very carefull not to get this in her eyes I let her chase it and lo and behold she started pointing for me. I liked this only after she was senting birds and on the chase as now I could control the environment and give the comands with out distractions. Then I would put her back on the birds and repeat the comands. Right or wrong this works for me and it has worked on 2 of my Irish Setters. |
RE: pics of todays training
Funny, we did a similar thing as the laser pointer. we attached a bird to the end of a string that was on the end of a pole or a fishing rod. We would toss it out and if the dog ran after it we would fling it up real fast so he couldn't get it. do this maybe 10 times and he will point it out and steady. we did this with our pups early.
