Anyone use this, the ingredients seem good? I was using Diamond till I found about the recall and found out my dog has been eating a recalled bag for last 2 weeks and I took the remaining 20 lbs back and got a full refund on a 40 lb bag. I refuse to use Diamond ever again, and after reading the ingredients of the High pro it looked very good and I bought a 50lb bag for the same price of a 40 lb bag of Diamond.

I used it for a little while just recently. Prior to that I was using Pedigree, and my dogs were loosing large amounts of weight. I was going to switch to PMI nutrition, which the feed store was selling a lot of to local houndsmen, but they were out at the moment, and the truck broke down. The Pro Plan is more expensive than the PMI, but they sold it to me at the price of the PMI because they told me it would be in, but it wasn't. Anyway, that was about a month ago. I weaned my dogs off of the Pedigree, and they seemed to gain some weight which was a good sign. There was also less waste than with the Pedigree. This last time I went to Elko, they had the PMI in, so I bought two bags of that, and am working on weaning them completely over. So far this stuff seems to be good too, and the dogs are eating a lot less, and maintaining their weight a lot better.

Your dog's requirements depend on it's age and activity level. For a big running bird dog, the Purina won't provide enough calories in the form of fat. You need a minimum of 20% fat to maintain weight during the hunting season and for some dogs that are hunted several times a week, you'll have to add more.

I feed Diamond Performance in season to my bird dogs with good success.

Fortunately, my food was manufactured at the Meta, MO plant. I can understand not wanting to feed it again, but my guess is they are probably safer from aflatoxins than the other brands at this point. I'm continuing to feed Diamond.

A high-energy food can be found at Wal-Mart in the form of Maxx-Nutition. I've fed it with success also, but more expensive than the Diamond.

I have fed Pro Plan for the last 12 years and it has been great. I have drahthaars that i duck hunt and pheasant hunt with. I feed the adult in the summer and performance in the fall or if it is a dog I am testing I feed it performance or puppy all year. Stools are small and it keeps the dogs in great shape.

ProPlan is excellent food if expensive. I also like Natural Choice a lot. It leaves the dog's coat very shiny, small stool, and the dogs love the taste. I do not like fish meal in my foods because all fish meal is treated with ethoxyquin per Coast Guard regulations. Remember, they only have to list it if THEY add it.

Just to clear things up a little. There is a big difference in the quality of Pro Plan versus Hi Pro. This is my opinion but the quantity of stool between Pro Plan and Hi Pro is fairly substantial. I feed my Draht and Britt Pro Plan performance 5 months out of the year. I use the Pro Plan Adult lamb and rice formula the remainder. I have tried Diamond Performance in the past but my dogs had terrible gas even after a month with adequate transition into the dog food. There are plenty of folks out there that use Diamond it just dosen't work for me. A friend of mine uses Hi Pro with his Draht and is happy with it. I know he spends a lot more time behind the pooper scooper than I do with my two dogs. If you want to save money I suggest using Purina ONE. This is what I used up until 20 months ago when I switched to Pro Plan. A little more stool but a good food. My dogs seem to control their weight a little better with Pro Plan but I am probably more worried than I need to be.

The Original reason that I switched from Purina hi Pro to Pro plan was what hunter mag is talking about. I could not keep weight on my dog, so i would feed him more so then his kennel looked like he was sharing it with a bunch of cattle their was so much stool.I switched to pro plan and I feed half as much, the dog is in great shape even today for a 12 year old and You could use the stool in a sling shot for ammo.

My main "problem" with Purina is that they use Beef Tallow as a source of fat. Canines do not utilize Beef Tallow very well at all. Thus, more juicy stool and less fat on the dog.

What about Kentucky Pride, started it after diamond problem, they got a 26-18 and a 28-20, been feeding the 26-18, got a great stool, dogs gobble it up, and no difference in perf. Thanks Jonesy
