Anybody hunting with bloodhounds?
 

I recently got a bloodhound pup and the more I look for stuff on the net the less it seems that people actually hunt with them any ideas why?

I'm not sure,but I think that there are a lot of bloodhounds that don't tree,this is something that I heard,don't know for sure.I would like to see for myself though.I do know that some are very slow on track.Also another reason that you don't see any hunted is that they can take a really old track that you can't take three days to get to the tree because you have to go to work sometime.

Not being familiar with the breed Ive guessed it for a tracker.

But what would it do? Im curious not smart.[8D]

They make excellent blood trackers or seaarch and rescue dogs. One problem with actually hunting with them has already be mentioned. They will pick a old track and this can be a problem. Bloodhounds have such a strong drive to locate what they are tracking that they will run themselves to death tracking it. They do not know when to give up. This is a good and bad thing. There are a few people I have heard of out in the nw that use them some on big cats. They will track them down and bay them. Since the big cats will eventually climb a tree or back themselves into a rock cliff they do not have to worry about it running out of the country and the dog following it.

Does the dog work loose on its own and bark when the cat has been cornered or does it work in a line?

What cat would it be? cougar or bobcats or?

thanks for the info I cant wait to get her out and start running her but right now shes laid up because on a vet check up the vet took her back to a room to "supposedly" watch the dog walk but when she came back the dog was favoring her right leg and right now shes crate bound for at least a month. and the bad thing is the vet fed me a crock of crap about having a bone disorder and wanted me to spend $70 on X rays then a bunch more on surgery but being only 16 yrs, I dont carry that kind of money. So then I took her to another vet and he said that she had nothing wrong with her that the other vethad proballypulled it outta joint and sprainedit.but what gets me is I had the dog for a week before I took her to the vet and she was 100% healthy but take her to the vet and THEN shes laid up, I thought about charging malpractice but decided not too [:@][:@]

3d this is not from personel experience just what I have read off of one of the hound forumsI visit. They are chasing cougar and the dogs would work off leash.

you could either freecast the dogs or leash them,then turn loose when the track warmed up.Wildlands,would you happen to know who in the NW is hunting with bloodhounds?

Houndhunter I would have to go back and try to locate the message on another forum. It has probably been about a year since I read the post. Somebody had just mentioned using a bloodhound and it stuck since I am so use to hearing of them used in human tracking or wounded game recovery. I can try and see if I can find it but who knows. I visit about 12 hunting forums and another 4-5 dog hunting forums, so it could have been any one of them. I suspect it is probably one of the dog hunting sites and more specific probably the hound site. If you want I will do a little digging but like I said it was a while back.

That first vet sure sounds like an A**hole. Hope it will work out for the best Grizzly.

So if you are after a specific individual animal or makes sure that the dog is going after the right species then the dog will drive it until it is wound out or victorius. Although they must be tough I´d think it sounds like an exelent breed for harehunting, since they dont often go very far away from were they first were found and yet can play marvellous tricks on the dog. Can bloodhounds easily be trained not to go after certain game? For instance it sounds like a really questionable dog for going after unwounded deer. I mean with such persistance and size in combination I´d guess it could run a deer to death.

Just how big does a cougar grow?
