You will have to train the dog basic obedience. Sit, come, stay, etc. Any dog training book will do at your local library or you can take classes. I would do this before taking him in the field or train him in the field before hunting him.

Next, introduce the gun.You can introduce game also but don't know much concerning fur as I hunt mostly birds.

You can train any dog to retrieve using force fetching. Check out http://www.oakhillkennel.com/library/force/force1.htmland http://www.oakhillkennel.com/library/force/force2.html

Heel! First thing your dog needs to learn (as simple as this may sound) is to heel on a lease. It needs to understand that you are in charge. When you stop - tell the dog to sit - then make it sit. Start walking and tell the dog to heel - than make sure it walks beside you. Then stop and make it sit and --- you get the idea. You can start giving it more leash, and then a long line, but when you say "Heel" you want it back by your side.

A dog that won't come on command can make for a long day hunting.

The best thing you can do is join a beagle club or some other club with sporting dogs. There is no better source of info than someone who has already done it. I know for a fact beagles are great for rabbit hunting, I don't think they would make very good retrievers, they tend to tear apart anything they catch.
