"Grand Champion" is a bench title (show dog). Bench Titles mean that the dog is very pretty and fits the 'conformation' requirements. Bench Titles have nothing to do with hunting abilities. Not all, but the majority of show dogs aren't that great as hunting dogs. There have only been one or two bench dogs that have ever 'made it' in the Field Trial or Hunt Test venues in all history.
What most prospective buyers (for hunting dogs)will want to see are lots of Field Titles (not bench titles)like the following: FC, NFC, AFC, NAFC, MH, MHR, HRCH etc etc(or the Canadian equivalents) in a 3 generation pedigree.
People that are truly "in the know" will also want to have proof that both dogshave OFA or PENN certificationfor both hips and elbows. Also CERF certificationfor eyes.A test for CNM (myopathy)has just become available, and serious breeders arenow doing that as well. All breeding dogs should be tested for Brucellosis (a canine sexually transmitted disease) within 30 days of breeding.
By the time you spend the $$ for all of the desired tests, you'd never make any profit, especially if there aren't many Field Titles in the pedigree, because the pups wouldn't sell for very much money at all. Then you have to consider the health risk to the female, puppy shots, dew-claw removal, 26 month healthguarantee on the pups (and what will you do if one of the pups has hip dysplasia ? ) Take it back and refund the money? Promise a free pup from the next litter?
Without Field Titles and all of the health clearences and a writtenguarantee, it would be very difficult to sell these pups, even if they were cheap.

The info Doc gave is valid. Assuming neither dog has a good working pedigree (MH,AFC, FC, etc.)the local paper is a good source of going price of dogs from non working backgrounds, usually in the $2-300 range. Dogs with good working pedigrees startat about $700.

I would never pay $700 for a puppy, guarantee or not. They have not proven a thing as pups, and even with a working line could be culls. However, I also would never likely own a lab, either, since I don't waterfowl as much as I hunt treedogs. So I guess on that note it doesn't matter if I would pay $700 for a lab pup, I don't hunt labs.

Matthewcmill,
I think what you are stating is your dog's from a GHRCH (Grand Hunting retiever Champion) or a GMHR (Grand Master Hunter Retriever). The field trial title is NFC or NAFC. The NFC is National Field champion. If you have pups sired by a NFC you could command a great deal of money. If the NFC is a couple generations back, then the money goes down. I think the difference between hound and cur breeders and sporting dog breeders is just what SWOSUMike stated. Hound guys won't spend $700.00 on a pup because its a crap shoot. A well trained bear dog will go for $5000.00 and up but you have to prove it at the tree. Hounds are independent hunters. The trainer just teaches them what the dog should run. Sporting dogs are dependent hunters and need more work so the buyer wants to know there is a chance they won't have to cull the dog. Hounds are culled tighter than Sporting Breeds so the Lab pup one buys generally comes with gaurantees. Are you willing to give gaurantees, Matthew? What are you willing to gaurantee? Dogs are a lousey way to make money. If you are selling locally, which is what I suggest, sell the pups for what everyone else is and add $20.00. If you want to go through the headaches involved with the tests DocE suggests then 700.00 is a good starting place.

MH (Master Hunteris a good title -- but it IS NOT a "Grand Champion" title). -- but if YOUR dog has no Titles -- or if your dog isn't OFA at least on hips (and elbows are preferred as well) and if your dog isn't CERF on eyes, then the pups would not be worth very much -- MAYBE $150 - $200 maximum.
Actually, without the health certifications (mentioned above), I wouldn't take one even if it was free.
And if ACTUALLY KNOWING SOMETHING makes us "cool cats" --- so be it

Looking up the dog's name shows GRHRCH UH BUDDY RYAN'S JIM BO MH owned by William Howard. Don't know anything about labs or their titles.

But, you have to realize, that unless YOUR dog has titles, it doesn't really mean that much as far as his daddy's titles -- his daddy's titles would mean a lot more only IF your dog had the titles too.

. j/kI'm assuming MH at the end is Master Hunter, that much I do know
. I also assume Matthewcmill uses the dog to hunt since he's associated (owner?) with this guide service. If he wants to sell the puppies, then I would show the parents hunting.
