rem700man I have not heard anything, but I do have some contacts within the VDGIF and as the season nears I will check on it.

Man, I hope it is not canceled! I have been practicing this summer and this will be my first black powder attempt.

Like 02bhuntin said, they threatened the same thing last year. It was about the same last year, but they let the season go ahead any way. There were some special signs at the WMA parking lots though about being careful about shot, burning wads and that outdoor fires were prohibited.

I've been worried about that too. Did'nt Wilder try and close it one time several years back.

VaHuntr the Governor does't call the shots on that one, I beleive the foresty and VDIGF folks determine whether it will be delayed or closed.

Taz,
I do remember about 4 or 5 years ago the Gov. did stop hunting season about mid-way through after it had been so dry. After a major outcry it was re-opened about 4 days later, I don't remember who Gov was at the time, It may have been Wilder or whom ever was next in office.

thanx everyone for the info,,,i sure hope we get the rain needed to keep the season goin as the only land i have to hunt is the GW natl forest in front royal. i love the land there & i have real high hopes for the place this year as it was logged in 5 & 10 acre plots for game management 3 yrs ago,,,,the deer are really concentrating on the browse in those areas
thanx again

I'm pretty sure Wilder was going to cancel the BP season if rain did'nt come. Seems like a week or so of rain, and hunters raising cane,he went ahead and opened it up.

Correct guys it was Wilder back in 93 or 94. They actually annouced that it would be closed but a light rain two nights before the actual date caused them to resend. Unfortunatly this year is much drier than a decade ago. It's not just the BP hunters that are of concern but the number of folks in the forrest that bring trouble. We'll see

WOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! It rained hard all night and is still raining as I type, I hope this is true for the rest of the state. I know it is raining from Spotsy all the way up to N. Va.

Hey Taz, maybe they'll put it on hold now due to flooding, ha ha.
Sure is an awful lot of rain in the past 24 hours, and still going.

2 3/4&quot; of rain here in Richmond, VA <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Man, we have needed rain for a long time!! A bunch of small lakes have closed their boat ramps due to low water conditions. Let's hope this keeps up for a little bit longer to make things recover and green for a little while.

Rem700 - I've hunted fairly close to that in the Lee Ranger District. I'll tell you what, I see more deer when turkey hunting and more turkeys when deer hunting, naturally! I'll bet you'll run into some great deer sign. They're all over there, along w/ a lot of people, be especially careful when hunting, the proximity to No. VA is what makes that area popular. FYI, I've also seen some good bear sign.

P.S. Where you from in Manassas? I'm down near Old Dominion Speedway.

Cool:
I've seen a few bears while hunting that part of the forest but never in season,,Well once in season but i thought it was too small until the last minute then it was too late for a good shot! I live on prince william st. right in old town. Maybe we could get together for a hunt or something

I hunted Quantico last year, and I lost out on opening week because the Gireens decided to ban muzzleloaders during the first part of the season. Lesson learned, have options and backup plans in place.

Mike - sounds good to me. I do a lot of hunting in the GWJNF and I don't like hiking into the middle of nowhere by myself. It would be good to have someone else to go with.

P.S. You do any dove or goose hunting? Let me know if you feel like getting together sometime. Steve

Sorry to say, I was there with a &quot;green&quot; base license on opening day for general firearms, WITH my Lyman .54 flinter, when the man came out and said, &quot;due to the dry conditions, no ML will be permitted-shotgun only.&quot; and I didn't have the Rem 1100 with me. No joy that day. managed to get out the last week of the season-got a shot at a doe last day yet. No meat on the table, but made the day. Lesson learned-pack the a backup firearm, and have an alternate hunting area in reserve, if possible.
