RE: New Va Group Hopefully!!!!!!
ORIGINAL: Gun-barrel Diplomat Speaking of "way too many people," what can a hunter expect when hunting on public land in VA? Are there a lot of hunters out on openning day and on weekends? I recall on my last deer hunt in Utah many years back, our party rode horses for two hours into a remote area to discover a sea of blaze orange in the valley below after the sun came up (most were Californians). There was shooting all around us. It sounded like a war zone. Needless to say, the deer were on the move. One hunter who staged on a hillside across from our party shot a small two-point just twenty paces from where we'd tied our horses in a thicket below our position. We had a few words across the valley. It was crazy. Is that what VA hunting is like on public land? Or can I expect something a bit more sane? The state forests and military bases are the best bet, IMHO. Butch |

I'm so happy that I've taken the liberty to have all postings forwarded to my email.
It's great to see everyone has awaking..lmao...You know the aphorism goes as such, when there's more than one email of a particular forum heed and peek in to see what all the fuss is about...lol Eng, welcome back I know you've been working hard at that new job. It will pay off come the season!!..hehehe[:@] |

So, what does it take to hunt the state forests and the military bases? Are those by drawing only? Extra fees? Otherwise limited? |

The military bases are a little more tough. I don't know about Fort Belvoir or Quantico Marine base, but I have hunted Fort AP Hill many many times. You have to sit through some cheesy 15 minute video, then pay $35 for a base permit. You have to contact AP Hill and reserve a spot in one of the 31 "Training Areas" - depending on which ones are open for hunting. AP Hill can also get crowded a little bit at times, but nothing compared to the WMA's. Deer are small, but plentiful on the base and are mostly does. Oh yeah, when you first visit AP Hill, - they are an active duty base, if you know what I mean - you will be searched, your vehicle will be searched, etc.... But, it's cool. You get a base permit and a paper that you have to leave in your glove box 24/7, and before arriving, you have to put the paper up on your dashboard. They have all the information and brochures and everything you need to know. The same would go for Belvoir and Quantico, I would imagine. Good luck! Butch |

How long of a drive would the nearest state forest with decent hunting prospects be from the Farifax area of NVA?

It's that time of the year fellow hunters, just curious are we still looking into this?
If so I have an inside track on 250-500 acres Prince Edwards five miles from farmville. It's $10 an acre I would hate to see another group obtain this..We've talked about this for sometime now so let me hear your thoughts if we are still looking to do this. |

I would be interested provided there are enough people to get it within my budget.
