There is more public land on the western side of the state than you can imagine. It's not a terribly long drive either.

During hunting season alot of guys from norfolk come out here to hunt.

Where are you gonna be stationed, Ship..Shore?

If you like to Bow Hunt, the ammo plant in south central virginia is supposed to have a great supply of white tails.

It is true that most public land is in the west of the state, but some is south of Richmond. Check out www.dgif.state.va.us for the location of the wildlife management areas (WMA).

I live in hanover county in the central part of VA. I hunt a few small places in hanover and i belong to two different hunt clubs that hunt in cumberland county. south hampton county or isle of wright county are full of deer. This would be where i would hunt if it was closer to my house. A member of one of the hunt clubs i'm in now hunted in zuni for years. he always talks about how good the hunting was when he was down there. You may have to trade in the rifle for a shotgun. I also suggest that you invest in a muzzleloader. The first two weeks of november seem to be the time to in the woods in VA. Once the dogs get turned out it is hard to pattern the big guys. If you have never hunted with dogs i suggest you give it a try. You will enjoy it and never forget it.
