Default Hunting on Fort Hood in TX

I have just been offered a position as an NJROTC instructor at Hebron High School in Carrollton, TX. Unless something unseen comes up, I'll accept the position. So, it appears as though I am TX bound.

I have done a little research and found that as a retired member of the military I am able to hunt on Fort Hood. I'm curious if any of the other members here have any experience with the base? I've hunted a number of other military bases but not on Hood. It appears as though the base permits will cost $65.00 for retirees so that means the hunting is cheap by TX standards. Mostly I'm looking for a couple of does and hogs each year for the freezer. Antlers no longer have any appeal for me and all my hunting now is for meat.

I'm also looking into the Navy's Escondido Ranch near Freer, TX. They also allow retirees to hunt and I know a couple of guys that have hunted there. Any info anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
