I have never hunted on public land, & living in the southeast corner of Virginia there is not much around here except the Chicohominy near Williamsburg. (Not much into slopping through the swamps around Backbay) Scouted a little there this weekend & saw several deer and a turkey, along with some great tracks.
Anyone have any good or bad remarks about this WMA? It appears to be about 5000 acres or so.( I' ve always hunted private land & knew where everyone in my hunting party would be in the woods at all times. )
I think it' s shotgun only, but not sure yet on blackpowder.

I have been to Chicahominy many times. It' s a big place but it' s crawling with 9000 hunters on any given day. [:' (] Checkout the Virginia Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries site and look up the Chicahominy WMA. They have a layout of it on Adobe Acrobat, that you can also print out.
If you go there, here' s two simple words: BUG SPRAY!!!! Don' t leave home without it. The mosquitos can be horrible. I mean, at their peak, they will try to pick you up and fly away with you!! [

Thanks, Butch. Like I said, a little leary of hunting in what appears to be a pretty crowded area. Just never had to before. It does look pretty tempting there, however. Found more than a few good locations within it while scouting it out on Sunday. (Saw three does & a fawn, and a momma turkey with her brood.) But I imagine if I found a good spot, everybody & their brothers that hunt there regularly know about it too. Maybe I' ll try it during middle of the week if I can take a day off or two. I think I' ll stay out of there on Saturdays. Unfortunately I' m not yet skilled with a bow. Just a gun toter. I think it is shotgun only, with buckshot only? (I hate buckshot).

Chickahominy is in Charles City county. You can' t shoot rifles bigger than a .22 but it doesn' t say anything about shotguns with slugs.
Hope that helps!
Butch
