RE: Uwharrie National Forest in NC
Even though I found a scrape and 7 rubs (from last year) near a patch of oaks around the Salisbury area, I plan to travel to my favorite spot in Raleigh on opening day of rifle season. I saw deer everytime I entered the woods around Falls Lake.

I can remember when you paid $5 a day to hunt the refuge and then you could see a hundred or more deer a day in Uwharrie.I have taken 2 or more a year from 1970 till 1998 then I just quit seeing deer there.Don' t know what happened the last 2 years I hunted it there wasn' t even any tracks in my favorite spots. My brothers and I hunted it in 1999and 2000 and only got 2 deer between us.
You won' t find trails there like you do in the mtns. unless you hunt near the river where there are laural thickets.Look for old rubs, beds, and where they are feeding on acorns in the fall.I think they are still deer there but they have cut so much timber there I think the deer stay in the cut outs. The last time I was there they had shut the road off going to the top of the mtn above the damn, you might want to try that it has produced a lot of deer for me over the years but now it is a long walk. There are so many small tracks also and sometimes these smaller tracks pay off too. |

I have been trying to check this area out myself in that i have a place in poolesville. took a long ride one day just to see what i could find. place looks big on paper, but from what i could see in the lower half, most the the property was privately owned and there was little or no access to it. i understand there is a section located on route 49, northeast of troy that is available for access to the park, something like a 29 mile stretch of land there, but i have not checked that out yet. you might want to check at the ranger station in Troy for further information.

RE: Uwharrie National Forest in NC
just wanted to let you know i went to the ranger station in Troy on friday. they were very helpful. area i was interested in was the birkhead mountain wilderness area. it is a walk in area only, found two parking areas at the trailheads, have not gotten into the woods yet, this was just a prescouting trip. from the salisbury area, it is best reached off of route 49 north, seems to be about a four square mile area. will post more as i find out more. :D

ok, i am going to let you guys in on a secret. in the badin lake area (rec area) there is a plot of land that used to be leased by a hunt club. they lost their lease and the owner deeded the land over to the state. check with the ranger station in Troy and one of the rangers will tell you where it is located and how to get there.
