KS Turkey Hunt
#1
Here are the pics from my turkey hunt last week in KS. My buddy and I had a great time and were done with our hunt by the second morning at 6:20am. Birds were everywhere and it was awesome to hunt an area that had so many birds. We heard as many as 15 different birds gobble in each of the two morning hunts and numerous hens. Roughly saw approximately 100 birds in the days we were hunting.
Quick rundown on the hunt, we flew to Kansas City Airport on Sunday and got in around 11:30 local time. We had to stop by the Cabelas Store for awhile then headed to the outfitters which was about a 2 1/2 hour drive around 3:00pm. We called the guide when we got close and he said come straight to his house and we would start hunting. We got to his house, changed, and starting driving around looking for birds. We spotted a flock of 20 birds in a wheat field and got sat up on them. I was able to shoot my first bird that evening, which the "hunt" wasn't supposed to start until Monday.
Monday morning found us on a cut corn field with birds all around us. We actually walked under 6 birds in the roost to get to the spot and didn't spook them. My buddy shot an bird early on, the birds landed into the field, walked around for a few minutes then the tom spotted the decoys and came running over to them. Before we could move after the shot we had 5 jakes and 1 tom start to come into the decoys from the opposite end of the field. The same birds that we walked under in the morning. The tom cut up into the woods behind us but the jakes came to the decoys.
Once all the birds left the initial set-up we headed back to the truck. We dropped of my buddies bird and went after the other tom that cut up behind us. We climbed a sage grass hill and spotted him with the 5 jakes and a hen about 90 yds away. We quickly set up against a tree and a small bush. My buddy was laying prone in the grass along the fence line and I was about 10 yds behind him against the only tree on the fence line. The guide called and luck would have the hen came right to us, almost stepping on my buddy laying down. She was only about 10 feet from him when she crossed the fence. The tom and jakes followed and I was able to shoot the tom at about 10 yds.
We spent the afternoon glassing turkeys and setting up a few groups but couldn't get any to come in. We did roost a big Rio that night and decided to go after him in the morning.
The next morning we sat up on the bird we roosted about 100 yds away again in a cut corn field. There were birds gobbling all around us and we were focused on the birds roosted in a tree across the corner of the field untiltwo gobbled right behind us. They were only 20 yds from us roosted in a locust tree with about 5 hens. Daylight came the first tom behind us hit the ground about 40 yds to the right of us, went into full strut right to the decoys. A few seconds later the second tom did the exact same thing. My buddy shot the first bird and our hunt was over at that time as we had harvested both of our birds.
I was able to get both of his hunts on videotape but we couldn't get mine on tape. Oh well maybe next year. I ended up shooting two Rio's and my buddy shot one Rio and one Eastern. I am now half way to my slam and he is three quarters the way. We both need the Merriams and I need an Osceloa.
I would definetely would recommend the guide we use and if anyone would his info feel free to PM me or email me.
