this law would only lead to more bear problems where i live, they never run dogs here along the shenandoah national park. we have one of the highest bear populations in the state. most deer hunters won't pay 25.00 for a bear permit,so bear numbers would have to climb. i don't need any more tearing up my trash .

This morningI read the new comments posted since I left my no vote to the DGIF site.In total I estimate it's 2 -1 against the new license but I didn't do an actual count. In general the only people in favor of thenew lincense are hound hunters. No surprise there.

I didread a few well thought out comments. IMO the most interesting was an idea to charge $25 if you want to hunt bears with dogs and leave the currentbig game license the way itis for those of us that enjoy the opportunity of taking one without dogs.I've also had conversations with friends who feel that if the DGIF needs to raise additional money, they should increase the non-resident hunting fees to a similar level that is charged by WV, NC and MD before increasing fees for residents.

The DGIF admits that it istrying to get the bear population under control by expanding the season. However charging an additional fee seems to contradict what they are trying to accomplish, which is to get more hunters to kill more bears.

If anyone can explain this is a logical way,I would be interesting in hearing your thoughts.

srwshooter, I live north of you and within 1 mile of SNP. The bear population has exploded in the last 10 years. It is not unusall to see a dozen different bear in one day, in mid-summer. I remember in your area a while back, a lady was killed when she hit a bear in her car. I know others that have hit bears but got lucky they was not seriously injured. Crop and orchard damage is on the rise, leading to more kill permits, and these dumb-azzes what to try to keep other hunters from taking a bear!. After all of the controvery last year to do this now is suicide. VBHA has lost friends with this, even non-members that hunt bear with hounds are against this BS. I believe bow/muzz/rifle hunters WILL get an extension along the SNP and they should!! NO NEW LICENSE!!!!

Popeye, Haystack, & Srwshooter,

I totally agree with ya'll on this one! It seems to me that this is a no-brainer. Population control is the so called objective here so why does it make sense to increase the cost of taking a bear? Well, IMO it goes back to the ol' adage "squeaky wheel gets the grease"(of course this being VBHA). These guys take the samepath as a lobbyist group in Washington. They cry foul whenever things are'nt going their way! As you said haystack, "division is not what we want" butwe cannot allow VBHA/VDGIF tocontinue to throw the stand-hunter under the bus just because that's how he likes to do things. Charge Non-Residents / Charge hound hunters and leave the rest of us alone.

I went and entered my comments on this stupid idea. I hate when special interests have more pull with the damned governement then the everyday citizen. I will just leave it at that for now. I can feel my blood pressure rising!!!

I see this leading to more poaching, if it were to go thru. At least in areas where bears are serious problems like those above stated.
