TOO MANY HUNTERS.. I had 3 guys put up a stand beside me ..even though I let them know I was there..:eek:7 trucks parked beside my truck.[:-]One left a new Summit VIper on the ground beside his truck..I was tempted to take it but I didn't want to get in trouble with the Lord..so I left it..

I left my area at 7:00 Am..and I was DEEP into the swamp..[&o]

Chuck, Green Swamp isn't what it use to be!:) Back in the old days, it was a Great WMA for Deer, Hogs & Turkey....Swiftmud and their Special May Hog Hunts and of course the increase in population in that area brings more poaching.

I'm happy to hear you say that you left the summit.....sucks about being over populated...i'm about to head out to toso. soon to hang my climber on my tree because i'm afraid someone will be sneaking in before me.......

I went to the GS with a buddy last year. It was horrible. Trucks and people everywhere. I was totally turned off by that place.

The mosquitoes were not bad at all...From a scale from 1-10 it's usually a 10...but it was a 1.

I'm moving far away from the crowd next weekend..[&o]I've got a couple more spots...I'm hoping the water isn't bad..both spots are wet ..inside a bayhead..

Chuck, good on you man, aman's integrity isbased on decisions he makes when no one elseis around orlooking. I hope you find a quiet secluded place to hunt this year.

Chuck,

Were you hunting the same area that you and I hunted that time? If so, that stinks. It is pretty far back in the there. I would not think there would be that many. I for one have given up on GS. The next few weekends get much better for reducing the crowds. The last weekend of archery is the best. You will be the only one there!

Chris..I was in that general area and even farther back..I figured someone found my trail tacks..I have 3 more spots though..but that one was my favorite..The trucks were backed all the way back to Rock Ridge on the first day..

Wow! I am surprised you had other hunters out there. I wonder if more hunters are hunting in state instead of going to Georgia and South Carolina because of fuel? Or are people laid off and just have more time to get in the woods? It sounds like it is worse this year than last.

I talked to a few at the gate while waiting in line..Some are here because our season starts earlier than theirs..some are here because of gas..There is alot of game in the Green Swamp but calls for hard work..They are deep in the bayheads/ cypress domes...

I look for acorns , little water, heavy trails and far away from people.
and all of this in the middle of a thick bayhead..This is where your game is.
During archery one may get lucky and get something on the edges..but once general gun kicks in..ya gotta work hard.

My favorite spot is the river..but it's everyone elses too.[&o]

I think last Saturday over 300 hunters checked in off 471 and only one hog and one turkey were killed. That is really a low take for the number of hunters. I agree because GS has one of the earlier seasons and is close to large populations of people it gets slammed on opening morning. Good luck the rest of the season.

I think archery gives one a better advantage of putting venison on the table..ther deer should be less spooky..I plan to use a fawn bleat Sat..I'd be tickled pink with a 90 pound doe.;)

Iused to hunt Green Swamp and produce a lot of times I went. I would just go and hunt the areas that no sane human being would crawl or swim to with the mud and skeeters.I have a general gun permit for it this year I will not use because it is just insane. My hat is off to you guys that have to just hunt the WMA's. Tough going there.

Not sure ..I was 3rd in line..I drive pretty fast and away from everyone..I saw no one but a gamewarden ...Seemed to only have about 1/2 of the hunters...They don't open the gate till 5;30 :(

I was first in line this morning....then I was off..at 45MPH..and they were still on my bumper .eatting dust.[8D]not too many hunters..no more than 10 trucks..
Sat in a tree.thought I heard a single deer about 9:00 and I thought one was blowing at me as soon as I got to my stand..The water level is up..Last week it was dry.This morning I was wading through 10" of water..No mosquitoes..I killed one deer fly.

I heard lots of frogs and baby alligators..last week I had an Eastern Screech owl trying to attack my face in the dark..It's wings flicked my hat..FREAKED ME OUT!!! In 5 minutes it did it again..I was up in a slash pine..This morning I was up in a cypress tree

I went in the 471 side at 6am and there was about 5 trucksgoing threw the gate . I seen a hog this morning and thats it. I geuss there has only been 3 deer killed so far this year.

I seen a little snake swimming in the water on the side of the road saturday morning . This morning I seen a hog running threw the swamp with some babies. Sunday evening I movedand seen a bobcat. Then about 10 hogs in the road on the way to the truck in the dark. I am ready for next friday I think I have a better spot now.

Went out 10/13/08 and the misquito's dont seem as bad as they did last year. All I seen was a few good deer rubs and seen where the hogs have been tearing up the ground everywhere. Might be a year for hogs...

I thought the mosquitoes were calm also.. I should have scouted better. I had a spot already planned..and knew something good woul dhappened..Three other hunters thought the same thing.[&o] So I have 2 spots on Powder Grade in which I killed a spike one year..There was a hunter there...[&o]and another place where I saw 2 decent bucks and got within 10 yds of a doe.and there was a hunter there as well..[&o]

So ..that bummed me out. I'll be scouting a new area..The spike area is still good as no one in there right mind would dare venture to enter into his living quarters..a serously thick cypress dome..I've been feeling an unction to get in there and find a tree big enough for a stand and cut out a shooting window..I went in there last year and saw lots of rubs and big tracks and pooper..BUT it is thick..Last year I saw a big deer twice bolt through there..So I plan to scout there and also a huge bayhead between Powder and 3 mile Run..That cypress dome runs 5 miles and has deer but you must become a rabbit beagleto get in there..On Googgle Earth you can see the spots that are thinned out or wet..
Forget easy hunting...they are not coming out of their cover ..except maybe during the rut..

chuck7 It is hunters like you (and me) that make me think twice about leaving stuff in the woods. My son and I came across a nice climbing stand left on a tree when scouting and said to myself I can not believe it is not lock up we could have taken it with no problem but I had the chance to teach my son about a the oath of a hunter not to touch someone else's stuff.I do still leave stuff in the woods stands and cameras and hope they are still there when I go back. With age we all make better decisions. my hats off to you and everyone else who has passed up on and easy score and have taken in the results that you have also found someone little spot or made their day by not losing their stuff. Honestly , I usedto be a real bad boy when I was a young man..I would have taken that stand in a heart beat..

BUt there are 2 reasons I didn't.

a. When I was a bad dude..I noticed when I stold an item for ..let's say 100.00 someone shortly afterwards would steal something from me for 200.00 It always happened that way.

b. I'm now a Christian and long for God's blessing.."He disciplines those He loves Heb. 12 I know He would have dealt with me very fast,,,so although I looked..I knew I wouldn't even touch that stand..I honestly can't make it without the Lord..and sin separates us from him.."Thou shalt not steal." ;)


Comment to the other hunter..yes ..I would take a chance with a 100.00 camera..MOST hunters are good people..there are only a handful of mean people. It's not as bad as some think..I've meant some out there that offered to share their stand with me..put me on hot spots and acted very professional. However..if you can put a lock on it..put a quality lock on it.. Some of us can't mess up..it could cost me my job even though it's on a Sat. or Sunday.Teachers are expected to act professional 24/7 period.

a couple friends of mine are still hunting across the fence over in Richloam. someone found their ladder stands and spread moth balls all over the area to keep the deer from coming through the area. people like that really tick me off.
