Highland County, Virginia

Heading out to Highland County for early muzzleloader. Can anybody tell when I can expect the rut to come in?

I'm not sure about Highland, as I'm a little north of there, but we've been seeing bucks chasing does already. Ruts NOT in yet, here in NOVA, but they're starting to dog the does as of a couple days ago. If I had to guess, from now until Nov. 20 is going to be your pre-rut through rut in most of VA.

I have been going to Highland county for the early MZL season for 8 years now. That week is the best there is. The deer are usually going nuts and rtunning all over the place. I would make one suggestionto you. GO EARLY AND STAY LATE.

What part of the county are you hunting in?

i've been hunting highland for 25yrs from one end to the other. the deer population in highland has been down in a lot of area's. this is due to doe tags and the lack of a good acorn crop . this year it seems to spotty ,some places you can't find a acorn, but some are loaded. if you hit area that has none,go as high as you can .highland has some high enough peaks that you can get above the frostline .sometimes thats the only place you find food.there are not many farm crops in most of the county so deer will sometimes leave area's to find food. i'm seeing bucks chaseing does now also.if you let me know what part you are hunting in ,i may be able to help more,we have a camp near Headwaters in highland

I'll be hunting Locust Spring area. The population has been down there the last few years. We're hoping for a resurgence.

Old post but we hunted Highland Co. VA for the 1st time last fall, 6 - 7 Nov. I believe. Saw a lot of deer but didn't see any rutting activity. Thinking of going back down again this year. When is the rut normally rocking & rolling there?

Coolbrze0,
Here in Lovettsville rut comes as a result of cold weather. And, as such non existent! All the deer around my farm are just cooling out. Not even thinking of getting any action. At this rate, I expect rut to be in late November. Especially since the weather guessers are calling for a warm winter.

I hear that. I hunt near you in Loudoun, PW, Fairfax, Fauquier, Culpeper, & Rappahannock Counties mostly. Highland is out of my normal area but we've got a farm there that we have permission to hunt. Just wondering what the rut may be like there compared to here. Hopefully it'll be cooling down soon, I can't stand deer / bear hunting when it's over 50 degrees...

Hey coolbrze0, my friends and I will be going down to Highland this week. Coming from NOVA. We will be up on one of the WMA tracts. Any tips for the area?

Hey Duke - sorry for the late reply, don't get on very often - how'd y'all make out? I haven't been down this year, but talked to a friend that hunts in Highland & he said their rut was normal in early-mid Nov. this year. We are supposed to be going down for late MZ (I think?) in a few weeks...

I killed a 5 point in Rockingham Co. that was still chasing does Nov. 22nd. They started early this year it was colder/wetter this year compaired to last year.
