Okies - Check In!
Any Okies been in the woods? I am in Payne County. Took a nice 105 lb doe on the 6th and have only been back out 1 time (10-14) and didnt see anything from my stand but jumped a couple of does coming out. I have been getting plenty of game cam pics but most of the bucks are still nocturnal and the does are feeding very, very early and late.
Anyone else seeing anything or doing any good? |
RE: Okies - Check In!
I hunt in Okmulgee and Pawnee counties. Have not drawn on a deer yet. All activity is nocturnal (due to unseasonably warm temps I would assume). Hopefully the cooler temps predicted for next week will shake things up a little. Good Luck!!!!!!

RE: Okies - Check In!
I've been hunting every evening when the high doesn't get over 80. Killed a doe on the 8th and passed up a pretty buck last Thursday that was probably a 2.5 year old deer that might score 110. I've been out the last 5 evenings and not seen a deer which is really unusual. The deer are making lots of tracks but with the nice weather and moon it must be at night. I'm in Major County.

RE: Okies - Check In!
[/align]Whats up guys, im from the SW part of the the state...the huntin is pretty good down here so far...i killed a 7 point on the sixth and only been out a couple times since...ill probably go tommorow and see if i can get a doe, but with the temps gettin cooler who knows what might walk out:D |
RE: Okies - Check In!
Greetings all, I'm pretty new to hunting, this will be my third year and I have yet to get crap. The learning phase sucks. Anyway most of my hunting is on public land in Norman and Lexington. I have seen a lot of signs but no actual deer yet.
|
RE: Okies - Check In!
Hey Okies,
My wife had our little girl on the 12th so my season got cut really short. Oh well ill be back out there next year, then again I may be able to swindle a few days during gun season or late archery. I went out a few times to Altus Lugert..saw two does both times, and yes they out smarted me both times. Went to Ft. Sill as well but it was around 90 degrees, didnt see a thing.Hopefully you fellas have a great year. Brewtopia are you hunting out at Thunderbird?? I finally went out and got thier map of the areas, but I didnt get enough time to check things out properly. I have Hunted quite a bit out at Lexington and I have never had anyluck, although there is usually a health turkey population. From what I hear time is better spent out at Thunderbird. Almost forgot...look in to Arcadia hunts, I think it may be too late for this year, but keep it in mind. |
RE: Okies - Check In!
Killed a small deer on Ft. Sill the second day of their muzzleloading season.
|
RE: Okies - Check In!
I shot a decent 8 pt yesterday in Bryan Co. I saw 9 bucks in two mornings of hunting. The young bucks were starting to spar a little. I saw a spike chasing a doe. Good luck.
|
RE: Okies - Check In!
Well got out yesterday (Sunday) morning and just about got blown over at 4 am when I walked out side, damn winds. Got to the lease and climbed my tree and wondered how good the ol summit climber would hold up in this wind, it did just fine. I was wondering if I did see anything would I be able to shoot (felt like I was in a boat on rough water). Well I didnt see anything but a few squirrels. My buddy didnt see anything either. We spent the rest of the day checkin cams and filling feeders. They should start to really move with this weeks weather.
Anybody else get out this weekend? Kent |
RE: Okies - Check In!
Falcon
Which areas have been better in the past for you at Ft. Sill. I hunted D3 a few weeks back, but its hard to get time to go down and look around |
RE: Okies - Check In!
PM on the way.

RE: Okies - Check In!

|
RE: Okies - Check In!
getting ready to head out for the weekend... our spot is just north of stringtown. the ranch manager down there said that he has seen the bucks already chasing... ill give everyone an update of monday of what our group does and sees...
|
RE: Okies - Check In!
buck-i
during blackpowder is Thunderbird relatively quite? I may get some time to go out on Sunday. My wife is going to an affair of the heart and I have to watch our little one all day so I can use that for leverage. I checked out the north east portion of the lake. It looks incredibly thick out there, should I even attempt to bring out a ground blind or stick to the trees? |
RE: Okies - Check In!
dav,i stay in the trees but i have never used a blind except natural cover a tree and brush. ,shot another doe sat.around noon it weighed 82 pounds had a small buck sneak in behind me about twenty yards he must of caught my leg moving..
today i seen one little six point small body and another deer not sure it was in the thick dark stuff, no big bucks yet. it wasn't busy at all this weekend at thunderbird..should of gave me a ring i would of took you out and put you in a tree. its was a good mile and three tenths walk today. when gun and muzzleloader comes around the hunting pressure drops greatly |
RE: Okies - Check In!
I have my reserve weekend this coming weekend, but I would love to get out there. When is the next time your headed out there?
|
RE: Okies - Check In!
i go every sat and sunday any time of the day and sometimes on fridays in the evenings..new job killing my hunting time.
|
RE: Okies - Check In!
I think I am going to take off work on friday and head out to Thunderbird. My wife and I just had a little girl on the 12th so all of my free time has been spent with her and the kiddo. Are there any areas that are better than others? I have a hang on stand im going to bring out there, have you had a problem leaving stands up for a few days. I cant wait till after the season and walmart clearances thier hunting gear, im gonna pick up a climber.
|
RE: Okies - Check In!
if you need a climber i got two, really four bou two are left at the place i went sunday.
i have a summit viper or ol'man original. my favorite place is 84th and tecumseh but for easy hunting 108th and lindsey you can hunt real close to the car and see deer . just go to highway 9 and 108th turn left or north, go 1 mile first intersection is lindsey, turn left or west go 1 mile, the road turns north stop here and park just on thedirt path about fifty yards in. walk back to the road, turn andgo straight into woods should be walking south. walk about 80ty yards it opens up a little. look for trees to climb .deer use this area all the time. after you hunt you might see my deer dolly tracks some good hunting across the creek in there. |
RE: Okies - Check In!
Thanks for the great info. Im gonna head out there hopefully early friday morning and stay all day. I may not get there till daybreak, it depends on how my little one sleeps through the night.
I would love to try out your viper stand, I tried to get the old lady to let me buy one today, but that didnt go over well. If you get a chance later give me a call 405-823-4384. If I dont answer just leave me a message, we have some work so I will be away from my cell for a bit. Thanks David |
RE: Okies - Check In!
Hey Everyone. It's almost rut time. Had a friend raddle in four bucks this morning and one nice tall 8 point that weighted 170lbs. And here's a pic of my first bow kill back on Oct. 19th, 8 point 148 lbs.
|
RE: Okies - Check In!
Got this one Saturday evening with the muzzleloader. 11 point main frame with a kicker on each side just above the burr. 225# I came up with a gross score of just under 164.

RE: Okies - Check In!
Great buck Mark!
So far it's been slow in my area. Too hot and windy when I have been out. Seeing a few small bucks. I'm sure it will get much better in the next week or so. Darrall Dougherty |
RE: Okies - Check In!
Live and hunt around Norman, every now and then go to Wewoka or Woodward. Havnt seen anything big yet but maybe this weekend.
|
RE: Okies - Check In!
Here's my buck...needed a couple more years on him, but still a nice deer:

RE: Okies - Check In!
I continue to see and get information from other NE oklahoma hunters that the little guys are starting to hound and chase the does but not necessarily the big boys yet. Anyone see anything on the contrary this lastweekend? Hope to be in my stand this weekend with the bow.
Kent |
RE: Okies - Check In!
I shot my 2 doe limit w/ the smoker this last week. I did pass on an 8 pt last sunday. Gonna give him my chance to grow. Hopefully he'll stay away from the neighbors.
I saw only that buck and one other. the second I didnt get a good look at. |
RE: Okies - Check In!
We hunt in Cherokee County, slow muzzleloading season for us anyway, killed one buck, two does between several of us and passed on a couple small ones, not seeing thechasing activity that everyone else is talking about.
Got drawn in down at Pushamataha for this weekend (11/10, 11/11) with blackpowder gun, looking forward to it although the weather's not looking good. Anyone had any experience down there? |
RE: Okies - Check In!
I live in Stillwater, OK. Home of the pokes!!! It was very slow at the beginning of the season, but has picked up here lately. I have seen around twenty rubs.

RE: Okies - Check In!
Hey fellas! I'm stationed here at Tinker AFB in OKC. I've been hunting here for about 6 years now, but only ducks and hogs. I'm going to give deer gun season a shot this year. I have a Remington 700 BDL .30-06 I bought earlier this year for the hogs. It's killed quite a few hogs and I figured I'd try it out on a deer this year. A friend of mine went out a week or two ago on his very first deer hunt with a $50 muzzle loader. In the first 10 minutes, he shot a big 10 point buck. Some people have all the luck! I'm a little confused on the deer tag I need. I see that they sell antlered tags and antlerless tags. Do you guys usually just buy one of each? If I shoot a buck and want to go again later, I need to buy another tag right? Sometimes the regs can be kind of confusing. I just want to make sure I have all my bases covered. What kind of ammo do you guys use? For hogs, I shoot 180 grain Core-Lokt's and that drops them dead every single time. But I shoot them in the head. Should I use a different ammo? Something that expands better? Do any of you ever hunt down at Love Valley WMA in southern Oklahoma? How about a place that processes deer in the OKC area? How much would it cost to have a deer processed? Thanks for any info!
Matt |
RE: Okies - Check In!
Hey KC10Chief, you are correct on the tags. Unless you have a lifetime license you will either have to buy all your deer tags or buy them as you need them.
Are you going down to Love Valley for gun season?? I got drawn for a gun hunt this sunday at Ft. Sill, I didnt realize they start thier season before the rest of the state but thier gun hunts are only on the weekends. Im going to head down to Altus-Lugert on the 17th, you are more than welcome to head down with me and a buddy if you want. I live about 3 miles from Tinker. Theres not a ton of deer on the section we hunt at Altus-Lugert, but so far we have been the only people to hunt the area, thats why we always go back. Last year I ran into a real monster of a buck out there during archery season, hopefully I will see him again. Oh Altus Lugert is Slug only, and I believe its antlered only as well. I would think that 180 grain would be overkill, but I doubt you would have to do any tracking. You would be fine with 150 grain Have you been shooting all those hogs at Love Valley, me and a buddy went down there during june or so....it was a fricking jungle. We didnt see anything down there, but I hear there are a ton of them out there. |
RE: Okies - Check In!
BUCK-i
Hey, I dont remember if I sent you a message the other day. The stand worked great, thanks again for letting me try it out. I hunted friday at 84th and rockcreek, I had a spike come in brouse the fallen leaves and then he walked back up the way he came and walked off to my right down the dirt path. When I got there that morning I didnt realize that dirt path was there so I tromped through teh trees down about 80-100 yards from the parking area. In the afternoon i hunted off to the left side of the dirt path where the deer have been crossing. I didnt see anything till I got back to my truck, there was a doe or a small buck about 15 yards next to my truck....that figures. Im definately going to have to spend some more time out there. It only takes me 25 minutes to get there from my house which is great. This sunday I got drawn for a gun hunt at Ft. Sill so hopefully I will see a good buck or two. I hear there are some monsters out there. Im not exactly sure how it all works, but I believe that I can take guests out there to hunt deer as long as it archey. Id like to get you out there and get you a monster, payback for letting me borrow your stand. Ill have to get some info from them on sunday when I go down there. How did your brother do over in the other location? |
RE: Okies - Check In!
dav; my brother seen two bucks, one he said was pretty tall but not wide ,the other was quite a bit smaller both about sixty yards away..i might hunt somewhere out there saturday morning. you ought to come out.
we went to another place wednesday he seen one buck and two does no shots, i saw just the tail end walk through some thicker stuff. hope your feeling safe in the stand once you learn all the tricks it is real easy to hunt from.it dont take long.you didnt get any shots yet. |
RE: Okies - Check In!
First thing I did was climb the trees in my back yard. It was a bit scary the first time I went up a tree, I just had to build trust in the stand. I love the stand, Maybe with some money from tax season I will buy one. I would love to go out on saturday, but I need to spend some time with the wife. She has been home with our newborn and she is really pent up and needs to get out and do something or she is going to drive me nuts.
Saturday Ill be with the wife, sunday I have a gun hunt at Ft. Sill. Monday I am off if your up to go out there or get together about the elk hunt in december. The 17th Im headed to Altus-Lugert for gun season opener. I definatley want to spend somemore time out at Thunderbird, I have the gun hunts but they wont be as satisfying as taking my first deer with my bow. Let me know when you have some free time. |
RE: Okies - Check In!
spend alot of time with the family they always come first, she'll appriciate you taking time away from hunting to spend with her.
i'm free on weekends and some fridays after 4 not much timethis friday so i took the two younger boys out four wheelin in the jeep. plenty of time to get with you to show you other spots.. |

It can get REALLY thick in some places though. Back in April, a couple of friends went down there to hog hunt. They got into the woods, got turned around and spent the night out there in the pouring rain. They were on a little peninsula that turned into an island due to the rain. A search and rescue helicopter found them the next day. Anyways, there are a lot of hogs out there. I've seen them in packs of 75 or more a couple of times. But the Wildlife Department went through there earlier this year with a helicopter and a machine gun and cleaned a lot of them out. What a shame. |
RE: Okies - Check In!
I actually carry a compass now because of Love Valley, we got turned around out there as well. Luckily once we got out of the woods we figured it out fairly quickly. I couldnt imagine spending the night out there in the rain.
You definately need to get you Ft. Sill class out of the way, I went down yesterday for a gun hunt. I shot a doe at 8 am, I should have waited to see how the rest of the day turned out, but I have gotten skunked for the past two years. They told me that on saturday a guy shot a 22 point buck out there. I forgot to go into the office and take a look at the pictures. They said its up there with one of the largest taken out there, it should be in the cannoneer (ft. sill paper) here in a few weeks. you can pull it up online. Anyway fort sill is crawling with deer, between 8am and 10am I could have shot 5 deer with my bow. Two of them I thought were gonna run me over, it was a little fork horn chasing around a doe. Once they got within 10 yards I got nervious, i was actually gutting the doe I shot when they ran up on me. I had a great time out there and wish I had more time to go back down there. heres the number to sportsmans services 580-442-3453, they are open 24 hrs and you can find out when thier next class will be. |
RE: Okies - Check In!
Thanks for the info! But you say Ft. Sill is slug only for gun season? Anyways, congrats on the doe!
|
RE: Okies - Check In!
Altus-Lugert is slug only, Ft. Sill you can use rifle in the majority of the areas
