CHIGGERS
For future reference, can anyone suggest the best defense against getting chiggers while doing final prep for the season.

RE: CHIGGERS
pants tucked into boots and a good repellant that specifically mentions chiggers. I like ultrathon 12 hour formula by 3M. I've heard that taking zinc vitamins will help to keeps ticks and chiggers away. Not sure if there is any truth in that though.

RE: CHIGGERS
No pine trees, just general scouting in both woods and adjoing fields. Thanks for the recommendation of ultrathon, I will need to get some since here in northern Va. it will still be warm come opening day of Archery Oct. 6th.

RE: CHIGGERS
I have heard of an 'ol Marine tactic is to wear panty hose under your clothes. Cabelas/Bass Pro also sell clothing that is like a 2nd skin that keeps bugs away supposedly.

RE: CHIGGERS
An old Marine tactic? GEEEZZ, my brother-in-law is gay and he wears panty hose under his huntin clothes too!! Not sure if he is hunt'in deer though!!??
Don't mean to pick on all those great marines, think very highly of the Corps. My daughter is a marine, not sure if sheknows about the panty hose trick or not. Kinda hopin she don't. Ibelieve in an old trick my grandpa taught me. It's called the sacrifice play.Always hang your doo-dads outside your pants as you walk through the woods. After an hour or sothey're usually covered with insect bites and the ocassional chigger or too. Lett'in the doodads hang out keeps the little critters off of the legs and butt. YESSIREE BOBBY, SACRIFICE THE DOODADS!!! The itching will drive you crazy at night, but the swell'in seems to keep the old lady happy. I grinn a little too if you know what I mean. Happy hunting ole chigger buddy. |
RE: CHIGGERS
And if you do get a few, just go to Wal Mart and get some Chiggeraid.
|
RE: CHIGGERS
we don't have chiggers here, we have red bugs:D

RE: CHIGGERS
Wearing light colored clotheshelps. Taking an ororless garlic capsule every day works well for both ticks and chiggers. Been doing this for over 15 years and have not found a dug in tick or gotten anychigger bites. Have found ticks on my arms and legs from time to time but they were trying to get away.

RE: CHIGGERS
I have had great successspraying my clothes down with Repel Permanone. I buy it at Wamart(camping section of Sporting Goods)for $4.96 a can. It will do two sets of clothes. It keeps the red bug and tic away. Also help keep the skeets of you too.
|
RE: CHIGGERS
Permanone (on clothes only) usually does the trick. Chiggers and yellow (deer) flies... the two worst critters IMO.
|
RE: CHIGGERS
I'm scared to go get my trail cam...put it out on Aug 28th and got chiggers terribly.
|
RE: CHIGGERS
Also ditch your clothes as soon as you get home and take a bath in HOT bleach water, then scrub with soap and shower off. This gets them before they're burrowed in. They can crawl around for a while before digging in deep.
|
RE: CHIGGERS
NO NEED for bleach water. A good hot, soappy shower is sufficient. Chiggers don't bury underneath your skin. They just insert their mouthparts to feed.
|
RE: CHIGGERS
Another thing to consider is that red bugs don't affect everybody equally. I'm in the woods all the time and it is rare that i get bit by red bugs or ticks. When I do get bit by a bug I just apply the Chiggeraid and if it isa rare tick, just pull him off.

RE: CHIGGERS
BUBBA, Why did you ask about pine trees ? Is that a hotspot for them ?
|
RE: CHIGGERS
YEAH THE PINE TREES GOT THEM AND BANANA SPIDERS THAT LIKE TO CLIMB UP DURING THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING. I FOUND OFF DEEP WOODS NON SCENTED SPRAY ALIL ON THE TREE AND B4 U GO INTO THE WOOD SPRAY INTO HAND AND WIPE DOWN WITH IT
|
RE: CHIGGERS
I haven't gotten into chiggers since I was a kid (crosses fingers)
|
RE: CHIGGERS
Permanone/permethrin...problem solved.
|
RE: CHIGGERS
Defenitely get some off and take a shower asap. That should be enough to cover ya.
|
RE: CHIGGERS
Got a bunch of those little buggers on me now. It seems it's a yearly preseason ritual for me. Stopped at Walmart and got some ChiggerX at $2.14 a jar. Smeared it all over my legs and I think they're gone/dead. I can't feel them scurrying around anymore

RE: CHIGGERS
Use permnon spray spray it on your clothes not your skin it does not stink and chiggers will not get near it. Ever since I started using it 10 years ago I have never had a problem
