Va Hunters
Hello Im VaSavage270,
I would like to take this time to introduce myself and hopefully network with a few others on this upcoming gun season. |
RE: Va Hunters
Hey..
I am a Virginia Hunter. I am going to VA Tech, but I hunt in the Tidewater region. I will probably spend the season at A.P. Hill. |

what is the proceedures for hunting on ap hill, I've heard my brother mention it whenhe was in the army a year ago. |
RE: Va Hunters
Mut - you live around the Northern VA area? I just graduated from GMU last year. I'm up here in Prince William County. I've never hunted A.P. Hill, but Quantico is pretty good. There are some nice bucks taken there every year.
|
RE: Va Hunters
Yeah, I live in Fredericksburg, well at least I consider it my permanent address.
I just started hunting A.P. Hill last year, and it looks like a great place to hunt. They have ~40,000 acres for public hunting. It does cost $30 for a license to hunt there. It is a really organized system though. They have 31 seperate hunting ares you can choose from. People start lining up outside check station after midnight to get the spot they want to hunt. They issue you a barcoded tag for the area you are supposed to hunt. One thing to remember is that you need to have you hunter education certificate in order to get you license. |
RE: Va Hunters
Mutt I live in Fredericksburg also, near Chancellor in Spotsy, where in the area do you live?

RE: Va Hunters
Well I "used" to live in South Stafford, but I have been going to school here at Va Tech for four and 1/2 years. My parents still live there, and I just go home to visit and of course hunt. I am actually leaving now to hunt A.P. Hill on Saturday. I am going to drive through the night and hopefully make it there by 1:00 am and get a few hours of shuteye in the car. I will post my results, if any on Sunday.

RE: Va Hunters
Coolbrze,
I'm in PW as well I haven't hunted Quantico in ages, I really would like to hunt it again. I'm sure there are many changes since I last hunted there 1991 lol, maybe we can get together. |
RE: Va Hunters
Hey VaSavage270
I live in Buchanan county in southwest Va, do most of my hunting in Russel county and Craig county. Does anyone else think the rut is going to be later this year in Va? I'm still seeing bucks traveling in bachlor groups and very limited scraping / horning activity. I have seen a little sparing going on but this time last year they were already chasing does. |
RE: Va Hunters
I hunt quantico every year. You need to take the base safety course (1 hr), and pay the (last year0 $10 license fee, and you'r good to go. Three tier license system green (active duty military, 1st pick), blue (reserve, retired and base enmloyees, 2nd pick), and brown (everybody else, last pick). there are at least 30% of the hunting slots reserved for brown tags each day. Best chance for anyone is mid-week. almost guranteed to get the exact hunting area you want, when you want it.
|
RE: Va Hunters
Cruiser said it right. I'm a civilian, so I have the brown card and get last pick of the spots, but Cruiser was also right about hunting during the weekday. That's the only time I'll hunt public land. If you 'renew' your Quantico lisence every year, you only need to take the Quantico hunter ed. course the first time.
As for the rut kicking in at a different time, it's not so much the weather that triggers the rut as it is the amount of light every day. I've been seeing ruttin activity up here in Northern VA for the past 3 weeks. Seen some good scrapes and TONS of rubs. |
RE: Va Hunters
North Stafford here, I hunt Quantico but really do not like the system they have that "Joe Civilian" can and does get "bumped" from hunting areas by rank of Military personell. Ft. Belvoir nor A.P. Hill does this. I hunt mostly Belvoir with bow, A.P. Hill with Black Powder and gun. Quantico with bow and gun also. By far A.P Hill has the best program besides Belvoir (bow only). The line at A.P. Hill is insane ,but if you hunt durring the week, I have never seen a line nor had to stand in one, its the Saturday/Friday night hunting line. I have gone down in the week, tues, wed, thurs. and just walked up and went to the spot I wanted to go. I usually hunt TA-10. some other areas too, but have taken a deer out of that area everytime I have gone.

RE: Va Hunters
I live in va beach and hunt southhampton county (courtland) and chesapeake on occasion. Missed a nice 8 pointer last week. Cant wait for gun season....geo
|
RE: Va Hunters
I live in Va Beach, too. I generally only hunt in Buckingham County, as my brother-in-law has a small piece of land out there. Hate the 3 1/2 hour drive, though. Has anyone hunted on the Chicohominy WMA?
I have never hunted public land before, only on small private land with a few friends &/or my dad. I've only killed one doe, so far, but I keep trying & learning each year. |
RE: Va Hunters
Hello guys! I live in Danville and the rut is already going on here! I saw an 8 pointer breed a doe Saturday morning and they are chasing them everywhere. I would have shot the 8 pointer but 2 days before I saw the largest buck I have ever seen in the wild and theres no way I'm gonna mess up the opportunity to ultra tag him! Good huntin everybody!

RE: Va Hunters
Crusier,
Thanks a lot for the information I've just talked to the check station personnel, yes it's 15.00 this year and a 20 minute video along with a chit chat afterwards. I'll be attenting @ 0545 thursday. |
RE: Va Hunters
Ben,
I've heard much talk about AP Hill, haven't really looked into hunting it until recently. I too use a Bow, my things is I'm tired of traveling and want to hunt closer to home you know lol. I guess you have a pretty good spot there Ben, bagging a deer each time in that's great! I normally hunt during the week days less pressure upon the Big Bucks..hehe and betters my chances. |
RE: Va Hunters
Sp865,
Patients!! The buck will come to you in time, best of luck on your next outting. Hopely when I head back to culpepper on opening day I can revenge the miss shot I had on a 12 pt monster I saw if he's still around. I'm sure he will present himself to me as I'm wiser this year. |
RE: Va Hunters
Just wanted to wish you all luck, I got my first bowkill the first of the month and am hoping to get my first blackpowder before gun opens. I have killed a ton of deer in Va. with rifle and shotgun, took me 3 seasons with a bow to get my first bowkill, I doubt the black pwder will take that long(I hope).

RE: Va Hunters
Howdy fellow VA boys. I live in Chesterfield County and hunt up in Buckingham bordering the James River with Taylor Hunt Club. Last Friday I set up in my favorite spot which each year is hot with scrapes. My buck came out of the cutovers 10 minutes before dark and hit the fire trail with nose down (she-pee). He came right under my tree - 30 foot shot. That is when my cell phone decided that he needed to beep me with low battery warning. Two beeps was enough.
All that was visible (damn leaves are holding tough this year) was his head – neck – and top shoulder. I scoped him at the base of neck and dropped him. 8 pointer – not huge but decent. Later the next day from the same stand I saw the beast monster who dominates the area – wide and tall beams. Hopefully this Saturday he’ll make a mistake……… Good luck out there. Rain Rain Rain. Drought???? |
RE: Va Hunters
Hey fellow VA boys, I'm from Harrisonburg but go to William and Mary in Williamsburg; got a little 8 with my longbow last Saturday back in Rockingham, the rut is going strong there.....pete

RE: Va Hunters
Hey VA people. I live in Stafford County and hunt at the Phelps WMA and I am going to try out Quantico after the rifle season ends at Phelps. I went to see the orientation film and get the license to hunt at Quantico this past Sat. and it certainly is a lot more hassle than hunting a WMA, but it is close and I can hunt it until Jan. 4th.
Good luck everyone! |
RE: Va Hunters
M38,
Is C.F Phelps a heavy hunted area during the weekday? That's about 36 miles from me. |
RE: Va Hunters
VASavage270
C.F. Phelps is not heavily hunted at all during the weekday. There is more hunting pressure on Sat. The one day it is very heavily hunted is the first Sat. in muzzeloader season since that is the only doe day. Try it, I like it. |
RE: Va Hunters
M38,
Thanks a lot, just a few more questions. Do I need to check in somewhere when I arrive are? I've hunted clubs for years and on private land which is too far of a drive and hassel at times. Just looking for something close to home for a change. VaSavage270, Prince William Co. |
RE: Va Hunters
Hello folks anybody stumbling on any quail? On any of the WMA?
Was just wondering....Thks CD |
RE: Va Hunters
VASavage - No need to check in on the WMA's. Just drive up to a parking lot, and you're set to go. M38 was right about the pressure during the week. It's not too bad. But on Saturdays, it can get ugly sometimes. If you're willing to put in a little extra footwork, you can get away from the crowds though. Go to the VDGIF website and print out a map of Phelps or any of the WMA's before you go, they are extremely helpful.
CDover - I've seen no quail on any of the NOVA WMA's I've been to. |
RE: Va Hunters
Scrub Hunter,I live in Danville also.Shoot me an E- mail.

see ya at the check in station! Mike |
RE: Va Hunters
Hey BuckDiesel,
I've been all over Amelia WMA and Powhatan WMA. Both are nice. Powhatan is HUGE compared to Amelia. Being public WMA's, they are packed on Saturdays. I'm not dissing anything or anybody, but, it's almost like if you ain't one of the first couple of dudes at the WMA by sunrise - man, you might just as well go back home<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle> Good luck. If you want to hunt Powhatan or Amelia, zing me an email! Butch ![]() |

Hey, guys. Got my first buck last Friday morning. Best part, it was with my muzzleloader I bought two years ago. Small one (2 pointer, about 5 inch tines, about 120 lbs), but still excited about it. Buckingham County, near Farmville/Dillwyn. Perfect lung shot with
my Knight, using the copper Powerbelt bullet 295 gr. |
