Acorns in AR
I went out today and glassed the oak trees.
What I noticed was that the red oaks are pretty well loaded with nuts. I would say the white oaks had acorns on about 1 out of 9 or 10 trees. This is a good thing...find the hot white oak and the deer will find you. Anyone else have an acorn update? |
RE: Acorns in AR
My lease is in South Arkansas around Emerson and I was there last week, didn't see an acorn on a tree. No red oak, white oak, nothing....

RE: Acorns in AR
My red oak trees in Maumelle don't have any acorns. The oak trees at my home in Benton have no acorns either.

RE: Acorns in AR
oaks at the apartment in NLR are filled with acorns, both red and white. don't know about the ones at the hunting camp--still working on hurricane restoration shift--12 hrs a night till futher notice. got a night off on wed. just to go home and gather up more meds. now set for 2 more weeks. acorns may be spotted around like in years before. some years i have plenty around the stands, and not any on other side of the lease. hopefully, at least one stand will have plenty. :)

on a unrelated topic, I went out scouting yesterday (Palaski/Saline Co. line) & I didn't see much until I went to a rubline from last year and sure enough I found a rub on a small sapling. I know the deer using it last year was a solid six point with a nice spread.Even though it was in a location I would expect to see a rub later in the year, I was surprised to see them rubbing so early in the year. At least I know he survived last year :)

I went to the lease this past weekend again in Emmerson. We saw close to 100 deer and 1 turkey....The deer were everywhere. They are hitting the feeders hard (275 pounds of corn at one free feeder in 3 weeks) I saw very few acorns......not much around.

finally got a day off and went out to the deer lease west of Fordyce. i didn't find a lot of red oak acorns, but there are white oak acorns all over the hill where my stand is:)it has a small creek thru the section of woods i hunt, so i guess they had water. i also found 2 small scrapes, and one large one about 25 feet from my stand! now, if i can only get time off to hunt! bow season starts saturday, and i know i'll miss at least the 1st week. i work for Entergy, and the hurricanes have us working from can to can't right now. keeping my fingers crossed, hoping everyone's back in time for gun season. otherwise, i'm gonna be REAL hard to live with!:Dwish all of you the best of luck-and save some for seed!!

Went out yesterday morn for first time, and we have a HUGE crop of whitoak acorns down here in south Ar this year. We got some high winds from the last hurrican and it blew a lot of acorns out of the trees.
This is the best crop of whitoaks we've had in several yrs. bogobble |
RE: Acorns in AR
Sitting up in a tree yesterday up here in the ouachita's it sounded like it was raining with all the acorns hitting the ground. Between the squirrels dropping shells from the nuts and the acorns falling it really did sound like it was sprinkling. I videoed 2 spikes right in the front yard chowing down acorns yesterday. It's amazing they get anything out of them with all the excess shells that keep pouring out of their mouths while they're eating them. It sure looked like they were enjoying them----they stayed right under the same tree for over an hour. Have a great deer season all....:) Sure am looking forward to some cooler weather. I hate sweating while sitting in my stand......(:

RE: Acorns in AR
There are none in North Central Arkansas. If there is an oak in an open area where trees aren't competing for rain, then you can find some. Inside the woods, the only acorns are rotten ones from last year.

RE: Acorns in AR
Acorns? I breifly remember them! Been in south east Texas for so long I almost forgot about the deer candy of the woods.
