Any .22 caliber centerfire would be great choice for yotes, if your state allows it. I have a .223 and use it on them all the time. Using varmint bullets, usually there will only be an entrance wound with no visible exit wound. Other .22 calibers that would work are the .222, .22-250, and the 220 Swift. The .222 packs a little less powder than the .223. The .22-250 and the 220 Swift pack a lot more powder, and they tend to do a little more damage to the hides on close shots.

A shotgun or probably even a .22 mag would work at close distances like you mentioned.

A 204 Ruger will be great for shots out to 100-400 yards but at 30 yards you might have some pelt damage. And Ive heard good things about the 17 Rem.

I use a .243 Win Savage Model 11 - Bushnell 6 x 18 power scope - haris bipod

for coyotes - I have found that the smaller grain ammo fragment alot more and does more pelt damage. I use 100 grain ammo and it seems to hold together better and passes through the animal with minimal pelt damage.

I have my rig sighted in dead on at 250 yrds. I am only an inch low at 300 yrds and an inch high at 100 yrds plenty sufficient for coyotes - but you'll want to tighten that up a bit if you're going to hunt anything smaller than a coyote -

At these ranges I would use a 12 gauge, 3.5, BB shot or the new heavi-shot predator load. The rifles are good, but there are just some applications where a shotgun is much better. A shotgun was always my favorite.

i like my 223. got enough power to knock em down at 350-400yrds. and the shells dont cost an arm and a leg. but other than that i like the 17 and 22mag for closer distences
