i was hunting yotes last weekend in ohio and i shot one with my 12g. an i went up to where i shot it and there was blood and hair every where so i started to track it for about 1 mile i had a really good blood trail then over the next few miles it slowed and it layed down 9 times and bled pretty good then after the last place it layed down a couple hundred more feet i couldnt find any more blood but i still followed the tracks till i lost the trail. what a shame i couldnt find it i hope i have better luck next time. it was 6 shot

Yotes are pretty tough cookies. I've heard stories of a few that were hit in head but just refused to die. [:-]

Yeah, I believe it. One time me and my buddy were out yote calling. We called in a double and they came into about 250 yards. Me buddy took 6 shots before dropping one with is 243. He went out and picked him up and brought him back and layed him down. I was looking close and saw that the damn thing was blinking and breathing. So we shot him with the twelve guage and the yote jumped up and started growlin. It took three more shots to finally kill him. It was crazy, we got it all on video.

The first yote I shot was with a .270 at about 250 yards in WV. I hit it high right behind the shoulder, and it took off yipping and screaming. It slowed down at about 200yds and I shot again...hitting it in the stomach area. It then began tumbling and running down hill...still towards me. The third shot at about 100yds hit it square in the neck...it never moved again.

One tough puppy.

While out lamping once we shot a fox with a .243 at about 60yds. It ran on and we chased it and managed to hit it with the truck. We were 100% certain it was dead but when we reached the farm it was breathing again! A lump of wood finished the whole affair.

Ummm... last time I checked, running over your quarry with a vehicle was a felony.

Sorry ks_sniper, I live in england where it is perfectly legal, obviously we dont make a sport out of it but it is just a quick as chasing it, jumping out and giving it another shot with the rifle or shotgun.

I've trap 1000+ fox in my life and 1 shot with little old .22 short right in ear area at 10' puts them down for good. I've also whack a few yote with the .220 swift never really had problems like you guys are talking. I, also shot a few of them both with scatterguns chased by dogs and either missed or planted them. 12 ga 5 shot turkey loads. 35 yds or closer.

last summer my cousin shot at weisle through the neck with his 17hmr the thing was alive still so he picked up a big rock and thumped it one. ( this is a small weisle) he wanted to show his parents so he threw it on the tail gate of the truck and after looking at it for a bit we reliazed the thing was still breathing.

I know this old timer that said he was out calling one day and called in a yote. Well he said he took a shot at it , and he said the scope was knocked off sight. But anyway he shot the poor pooch's leg off and it took off running into the brush. A few seconds later the dog came back, picked his leg up in its mouth and took off into the brush again. Man, that would have been crazy to see.

while out pheasant hunting last year we had one running infront of us down the corn rows. when it finally came out in the open field 3 of us shot it 8 times with 4-6 shot pheasant loads. the final killing shot came from a 20 gauge. the three of us that shot it were ready for it to run out because the guys walking the corn rows could see it crossing back and forth between the rows so they warned us. it was one tough cookie

yeah if u use a 12 gauge the only kind of ammo u should use is a slug unlees your usin 000' buck shot.

RE: It just wouldnt die!!!!

I have hunted yotes in western NY for a long time and have had my share of tough dogs but not too many.

I normally use a Savage model 11 .243 Winchester MAg with 95 grain teflon tipped remmington ammo. Knocks em down in thier tracks everytime unless I screwed up the shot.

If I am hunting a wooded area instead of a field I'll switch to a 12 gauge with number 2 or 0 shot sometimes 00. They run a little further then but not that far.

As far as tough dogs go I have one that sticks out in particular so much so that I got this one mounted (life size).

I was out deer hunting and kicked out 2 doe I ran around a little knole to get off a shot at one and heard them comming out of the brush. Instead of the deer out came a nice looking coyote. It was about 20 yards in front of me so I pulled up and shot. I was using a 12 gage loaded with federal 3" slugs. The dog never even flinched he just sped up.

I couldn't belive that I missed, but I walked over to see the trail in the snow and saw a small splatter of blood. The longer I followed the trail the heavier the blood trail got and I caught up with the dog in a swamp 150 yards from where I first shot him. He was dead when I walked up to him and I found that I hit him good. A slug through the front shoulder and exited the chest. I have shot deer with worse shots than that and they went down quicker.

I was pretty impressed with the strenght these animals have.

RE: It just wouldnt die!!!!

The size of the shot is the problem. I used BB shot when I hunted coyotes in Utah. I liked a shotgun better than a rifle in the country I hunted. BB shot rolled them out to 45 yards (full choke, 3" mag, 12 gauge). A hunting partner used a 10 gauge, BB shot, 3.5 mag. This was a 50-60 yard gun. Jus like every other game animal, from rabbits to elephants, it's where you hit them that's the most important. What you hit them with has to get to the boiler works, but you have to hit the boiler to put them down.

He will eventually die of lead poinsoning. Possums are tough shells to crack too. My cousin and I had one in a trap once and we thought it was dead, when my cousin went to get it out of the trap the possum went for my cousins face :D If I hadnt emptied the 10shot mag from my 597 .22, that possum would have tore my cousin to peices. :D
