Skunk??

What's the best way to get rid of a skunk that's running around my neighborhood? I want to get rid of it before it sprays or bites my dogs or daughter.

Thanks for the help!

Sit out on the front porch with a beer and a .22 and wait. Thats basicly what I would do.

I have trouble with skunks at my place and not much time during the weekdays to sit out and wait on 'em. Those "live catch" traps with a can of tuna in them work really well. They also work well on my barn cat, so if you have cats you might need to put them up.

I would use a live trap. Once you catch it shoot it before you try to move it! Don't move it in the cage alive it will spray you!! Shoot it in the head with a .22 pistol and it will usually not be able to spray. Then you can bury it or whatever. ect.

I'd say go with the live trap and a quarter stick of dynamit under the trap. Works for cats too. [8D]

My boss has a live trap that I can borrow and I have 17HMR that should do a pretty good job at rearranging his brain. Maybe I'll get lucky and catch that stupid cat that keeps leaving tracks all over the hood of my truck! Thanks for the input!

they make an alive trap just for skunks. it is a low profile cage. the skunk can not spray if he can not lift his tail. this is what the game wardens use.

Not true. I'd always believed that one, too, until I took a direct hit from one under a belly mower.[:'(][:@][:'(] Also, NOTHING takes the smell away. I tried tomato juice, vinegar, gasoline, etc. After a couple hours, my sense of smell was pretty much use to it, so it didn't bother me anymore. Although everyone else seemed to think I stunk for about a week or 10 days.

put a large black trash bag over your live catch trap... just leave the entrance open... after you catch the little stinker pull the bag closed over the end... gently move him to the rear of your car, place the opening around the exhaust pipe and fire that mother up... make a small slit in the bottom of the bag to release the build up of gasses but in 15 minutes it's all over... no smell, problem's solved... everyones happy but Peppe... :D

we have used this style of trap at are church and have never been sprayed yet. there is one product that does work real well. you can get it from your vet. it is called SKUNK-OFF. comes in a small white bottle. when our dogs take a spray you wet them down with this stuff and let it sit about five minutes then towel dry. if you can smell the skunk after this you have just missed a spot. repeat the process and it works real well. i have used tomato juice, vinegar and all the old cures but never had:) any luck. try the skunk off you will be surprized.

I had a problem with a family of skunks that lived under an old house next to mine. Someone moved in and they relocated to my garage. I placed a 220 conibear trap on the inside of the hole they were comming in through and caught 9 of them in about 2 1/2 weeks. They practically had to crawl on thier bellies to get through the hole so when they were caught by the head with conibear thier boddies were still in the hole. I never had one of them spray.

If you use a live trap limbereger cheese works as a good bait. I have used it for skunks a few times but they will come to just about anything, canned cat food - pasteries whatever. I have caught them with just about whatever I had on hand at the time.

If you through an old blanket over the box trap the skunk might spray but it wont get you then you can move the trap and release the skunk if you want.

shoot it just wait till its in the neighbors yard or across the street, LOL my buddy bill had one in his yard and shot it 2 feet from his porch even after getting rid of the carcass the smell was around for weeks, I told him next time let it carry its own stink away on its own 4 feet across the hiway before you shoot it.

had a similar incident except it was a rabid racoon out in the day and i shot it between the eyes with my benjamin sheridan air rifle. And the neighbors called the cops lol i thought for sure i was gonna get cited but ended getting a long lecture about discharging firearms in city limits and a thank you for taking out the rabid racoon the cop was really cool about the whole thing.

4x4innc.....I use a Trap that I bought at the feed store......I buy a can of SARDINES and
punch holes on the top with an ice pick.....put it in the trap....set the Trap.

When you catch one, keep a distance or he will point his tail and squirt you.Try a HEAD shot
you don't want to bust up the scent glan's....you might trap some FOXES too. IT WORkS!!

I use live traps and the .22 with any type of left over food scraps or fish guts stuff like that. If you shoot it shoot for the lungs not the head, skunks use their lungs to spray and cannot spray if you hit the lungs.

RE: Skunk??

set a live trap, bait with marshmallows to avoid cats. once caught slowly walk up to cage and cover with blanket or towel, once covered the skunk will not spray, trust me I do this for a living! You can then transport to the country and release and shoot it once it is out of the trap. To remove skunk odor, mix 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide,1/4 cup baking soda and 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap in bucket and apply to stunk up area.
