i would say it is a little to big. if you are, i would suggest 4's or 5's, and wait until they are out there a little bit. my favorite gun for squirrels is a 20 choked extra full with #6's

I prefer a .22lr for squirrel but have used a 12 ga #7 1/2 w/ full choke.. worked good. minimal shot left in the squirrel.

RE: 12ga to big for squirrels

I use a Winchester 1300 Defender in 12 ga for squirrel all the time. It's short, so I can get into the thick stuff and it has an open choke (no choke at all) so I get the close shots as well. I learned that it takes 3-5 pellets to bring a squirrel down so I use size 6 shot for up close and 7 1/2's for 40 - 50 yds. After doing the math, I get 4 6's in at 40 yds and 7 7 1/2's at 40 yds, so either will work but I prefer to have to remove as little meat as possible.

12 gauge is fine.

I think it is pointless to use a 12 gauge on squirrels. I would just use a .22 because a 12 gauge wouldn't be a challenge at all.

12 ga is not too big but when you eat them you have to be careful not to eat the little bb's
so i just hunt with a 22 and shot right in the head

I'm a well-know hater of squirrels

I'd recommend a bazooka or hand grenades if possible, or maybe a punt gun. 12 ga. will do if you don't have anything more devastating.

Good luck with your extermination project.

I dont know weather a 12. gauge is too big, but i use a break barrel .410. with 7 shot. its not too small and it gets the job done. there isn't too many BB's to pick out either. you just have to make sure to aim at the head. the last thing you want is cripple squirrel.
