Season started here in missouri in July, but they started cutting on hickory in august. We been going just about every weekend and some during the week. Theyre starting to cut on pecans, and we been wearing 'em out here in the bootheel in the southeast part of the state.

Hello to all, I'm a very newly licensed hunter (pre-hunter?)who has just passed the mandatory hunter-ed. course up here in New Jersey but who has no time afield yet. I don't have any family or friends who hunt and the whole outdoors thing is new to me, so, I'm hoping you will be willing to help: Our squirrel season starts Sep. 28, I plan to go out for some, but, I've never dealt with processing game meat before. I'm wondering: What is "warbles"? I assume it's a disease or parisite? Can squirrels have rabies or any other disease or parisite that I need to learn to recognize? Is there a health risk to eating "tree rats" and how do I minimize it? (maybe proper cooking is enough? Or do I need to recognize the ones that are sick and not try to harvest/cook them?)

Hey Bob,

First, welcome to the boards and welcome to the exciting adventures to hunting. You're doing the right thing coming to the forums for advice, as I am sure you will receive ample good advice to your questions.

As to worbles (we call them wolves in my poart of Georgia), this is a parasite that gets under the skin of a squirrel. If you look closely at a squirrels skin, you will see a bare spot that is hairless, and it will appear to be a knot on it's skin. These are usually dime-sized and are fairly easy to spot. Under the skin is a grub-like worm which feeds between the skin and the meat. Personally, if I accidentially kill a squirrel that has this on him, I discard the animal. Some older hunters have said that these are the healthy animals, but I cannot get past the thoughts of the grub <img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle> so it is easier for me to justify tossing it. Usually, in the south anyway, squirrels dont carry these throughout the summer, but after the first cool snap you start finding alot of squirrels with them. Then once winter starts, they disappear. Look close before shooting them and you'll spot 'em, especially if shooting a .22 with a scope on it.

I'm getting a lot of good info just browsing the boards and checking through the older posts too. The internet and it's users have been a big help for this newbie.
I will probably post about my experiences, as I gather them, somewhere in the &quot;Northeast&quot; forum. Maybe start a topic to post what it's like to be new in the sport.

are there &quot;warbles&quot; on tree rats in michigan. I've skinned alot of em and don't remember seeing any, just lots of fleas. The huntin starts in a week, I can hardly wait.

I'm in Indiana also. I have had a great season so far and have shot 26 squirrels in a little 6 acre woods. This woods is loaded with hickory and oak trees. They are loaded with nuts this year. I pretty muched thinned out the woods this year, which will make the deer hunting very good with the acorns dropping like they are and the deer wont have to compete with the squirrels as much. I am done with the squirrels this year, because I want it to settle down for the Oct. 1 deer opener! I love squirrel hunting!

Hey everyone. My name is Jason Land, 21, and I'm from Kentucky. My passion is squirrel hunting. First day was a bummer for me, I didn't see a thing. I heard 2. Next day, I got 4. I've been out 6 times and got 14 so far. I use my Kimber .22 SVT and sometimes my 20 gauge. I always stalk them, no better way to do it I think. You see more and cover a lot more ground. Not seeing much nuts this year. We had a dry summer. Mostly seeing them eating small hickory nuts that have not yet matured because of lack of rain and acorns. Seeing them in the creek bottoms a lot too. Not seeing many fox squirrels this year. I only got 2. The rest are all young grays. Mostly females. Has anyone heard anything about the West Nile Virus in squirrels? No warbles this year either, so far. Two years ago they were bad down here. Well I will be visiting here every day hoping to ask some questions and give some answers. I'm also a computer nut. Any problems with computers, let me know. Just email me anything, anytime.
