RE: .22 or .177 pellet gun
i guess from my stand point i see that option like a bow hunter sees carbon vs. aluminum the .117(carbon) is faster, and will allow more of a distance error, do to a flatter trajectory, where as the .22 (aluminum) wont be as fast, but it will hit harder getting more kinetic energy. No with grouse, and rabbit KE isn’t a very big deal, because they are both very (weak) animals. But if it helps, I bow hunt with carbon lol I donno if this has helped you out, but that’s the only way I think I can kind of put it into words for you. Sorry if it isn’t understandable, but good luck what ever way you decide to go.

Get the .22. The pellet guns you get are shot with the lightest pellets they can get to obtain that speed. .177 is fast, but you don't need speed, you need ft lbs. A .22 pellet gun puts out about 12-13 fp with a .177 being less. I would go with the .22. Pellets are more expensive, but you will get more out of them.

i'd consider this in your desicion. the equation for KE is =MV^2
Mass is give a "1" value, but the velocity is squared. small increase in speed will help the power aspect more than a medium increase in weight. Remember in football how the little guys always seemed to give hits that equalled the 230lbs middle backer?
personally id go with .177 because in the end where talking about rabbits! not deer or even coyotes. I bet many a small lad has "konked" a rabbit with nothing more than a slingshot and lots of luck.
