Default .223 or .17 for coyotes????

Which gun is more effective for yotes?? I was going too buy the .17hmr, but after reading some info on ballistics, I think I'm leaning toward the .223!! Most of my shots will be in the 100+ range. Thanks........

I use a 308 win loaded with 125 grain speer tnt bullets on yotes really cant go wrong it really kills them dead I try to hit them square in the shoulder makes them do a 180 and fall right over.

I have taken yotes with both caliburs. The .17 is a great/fun gun to shoot, but imo, is a yote gun out to 100yds. The .223 will kill at greater distances, but can sure leave a n exit hole. The ultimate in my opinion, is the new .204 on the market. It's alittle spendier, but one heck of a gun. taz

Im a HUGE fan of the 17 HMR, but it is NOT coyote gun at any range. 223 would be my vote though id want a 22-250 formyself or maybe a 204 if they dont waste hides. Theres also the 17 remington (centerfire) that is a 300 yarder you may look at.

IMO the 17 HMR is not enough gun for coyotes past 40 yds and then only on droadside shots . Several of us went out ground hog hunting yesterday , a pair of yotes came walking past us at 60 yds . One was hit 3 times with a 17 to ancore it . I took the other at about 90 yds with 1 shot from my 22 mag . The 17 is great on chucks to 150 yds ,but lack penatration for larger game.

Another vote for the .223! the .17 can and has killed coyotes, but it is a minimal cartridge to do the job consistantly! Besides, the .223 is cheaper to shoot!

the 17 Hmr will Gett'r done use a heavy hollow point to the skull should do the job. after all you can kill anything with a 22lr . and the 17hmr has more power then those .22Lr. Skull shots are the way to go wtih those little rounds
