RE: Your personal best???
i was about 10 years old. had a daisy 881 powerline pellet gun. i was using daisy round nose pellets. i was shooting at a flock of starlings across a small valley, they were about 200+ yards away. i gave the gun 10 pumps, and aimed a little above the horizon over the flock. i fired. a couple seconds later the flock takes off. all except for the one starling that i hit.

RE: Your personal best???
I was out pheasant hunting for the first time. I was one bird short of my limit and my friend hadn't gotten one yet. We're really competitive, I was thinking I could give him crap for a week if he got skunked and I got my limit. I'm looking to the right and then turn to the left to see him just about to take a perfect shot on a pheasant flying right towards us.
I didn't have much time, shot from the hip with my old model 12 and nailed it. Unfortunately my friend did get one when we were walking out of the field. |

RE: Your personal best???
i shot a flyinf dove out of the back of a fast moving truck one time with my shot gun not the safest thing and probably not legal but me and a friend were riding through the woods and i was the only one hunting so i rode in the back of his truck to get in and out faster and all and a flock(?) of dove flew up and i picked one off while the truck was still moving pretty quick it was probably more luck then skill though

RE: Your personal best???
around here we dont have much long distance......and thats not my cup of tea anyway when it comes to hunting.....i have 2 shots.....one was a deer.....distance was over 100yds....probably 150 or so......we were doing one ouf our giant drives with like 10+guys....dont know how many were there that day.......we lined a hill and the drivers passes us.....i talked to the leader and he said be smart...turne around and watch us walk away....the deer are going to turn and run at you guys not away from us....i was thinking ya right they are going to go straight away....but this guy knows his stuff when it comes to giant deer drives and sure enough after the drivers got into the woods 300yds across the pasture a few deer came runing out.....i was the only one with a doe tag i think......mine was with one other small one....it got about 100yrds up the hill and about 125 out from the edge we were lined on....i stopped it while it was out there so there was no danger of the others up that way....they were all behind me at an angle.....bahhed at them....they stopped....thuhboom! the back end of the doe collapsed first then down the rest went...looked like the elk on "jerimiah johnson" for those who seen that flick....that was leaning against a tree......couldnt use the tree as a rest because the fence went though it and i couldnt back up far enough...so i pushed up against it to steady some of me.....i guess it worked...oh ya....gun was the mauser 98k in 3006 bullets were federal high energy 165 gr psp....the other was a squirrel.....i was sitting there after school on an oak ridge kinda dozing off a little.....just relaxing in the warm sun.....i heard a nut fall and knew it was a tree rat....sure enough i looked up and there was a tail flickering....really far down the hill......id say 75-100yds through the woods....i put the 4x scope on him....held about an inch about his head...squeezed off.....heard the gun.....then heard the bullet hit him......then heard him hit the ground after a 60ft fall into the litttle tiny creek.......wind took the bullet just right....took off part of the ear then went in the shoulder.......would been a perfect between the eye head shot if the wind didnt drift it........that was with a marlin 22lr.....with a cheap tasco 4x scope.......

RE: Your personal best???
I have had lot of good shots in the past but only a few really stand out in my mind right now. I dont recall all the detail so i'll just try to remember the best i can. POI means Point Of Impact. I am updated this today (june 16th)
Weapon: .22 Ruger w/scope Ammo: CCI Stinger (hollow points) Distance: 100+ yards Animal: Squirrel POI: Head (was aiming for body but it moved last second) Weapon: .22 Ruger w/scope Ammo: CCI Stinger (Hollow points) Distance: 204 Yards (range finder) Animal: Jack-Rabbit POI: Body*1 Weapon: .300 Savage Magnum Ammo: Will find out Distance: 273 Yards (range finder) Animal: Wild Pig (Sow) POI:Body Weapon: Compound Bow Distance: 25-30 Yards Animal: Jackrabbit POI: Body*2 Weapon: Compound Bow Distance: 20-22 Yards Animal: Jackrabbit POI: Body*3 *1..I wasn't sure if i did get it in the body or in the head because we were shooting from a fence line for some farmers but we didn't have permission to go onto their property but could shoot from where we were at as long as we didn't shoot any cows or leave our empty casings. I know the rabbit was in fact dead but wasn't able to tell where the actual impact was. *2..Okay this is funny story behind this one. I just got my bow maybe a few months before trying my luck on getting an rabbit. My dad and I went to this large brushy area where rabbits were running around quite a bit. I was basiclly just walking around flushing the rabbits up, which always seem to have a bad habit of doing so after i passed by and stayed among heavy brush. I was able to get one shot off at one, but because i never tried shooting at running targets, i mislead this one and my arrow hit low and right, however when it hit the dirt, it tumbling end over end and hit the rabbit in the body with the nock end. So i think that was my best shot with my bow so far even if i didnt kill it lol *3..This happen just a few days ago. I took a shot at this rabbit and hit it, it went into some thick brush and i wasn't able to locate it until yesterday. The 'yotes got to it so i couldn't tell where my arrow hit but i had some blood on my arrow (what was left of the rabbit was about 30 feet from my arrow) |

RE: Your personal best???
headshot (at least I think so, it was a bit missing when I picked it up) on a hair, 7.62 x 39 Valmet, iron sights, 200 to 250 yards, clear day. shooting position: rifle rested on a backpack, laying down. I was 9 then and actually not hunting but practising....the hair just got into my sights.... my first kill with a rifle btw. I still have the skin.
Kind regards, Vesi |

gun.ruger 10/22 3x9 scope
ammo.cci stinger I was out in the country and was shooting prarie dogs and my scope kept getting more off every shot i took and i noticed that the rings were loose so I headed home and decided to take a crazy shot at one at about 125yds(paced it off) away,I knew the scope was down and to the left so I aimed up and a little to the right and shot.I killed with a body shot. ,shootr |

RE: Your personal best???
ABOUT 35 YRS AGO I HUNTED WITH AN ELDERLY[89]GENT NAMED FRANK.IN MID NOV. I WAS TO MEET HIM EVERYDAY @ 09:30 HR FOR COFFEE AT A CERTAIN SPOT.IF HE WASN'T THERE I WAS TO LOOK FOR HIM TO EITHER HELP WITH HIS DEER OR RETRIEVE HIS CARCASS![X(]ONE DAY WHILE HAVING A CUP,A SMALL BUCK CAME RUNNING AT A SPEED SOMEWHERE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF FAST. MY NEW BROWNING BOLT OLYMPIAN.338 MAG WAS LEANING ON FRANK'S CAR.AS THE DEER RAN INTO THE LAST 50 FT OF BUSH B4 IT REACHED THE FENCE, I GRABBED MY RIFLE AS FRANK SAID,"QUICK BOY! QUICK!" I GOT THE GUN UP & FIRED AS THE BUCK CLEARED THE FENCE.WE HEARD A HOLLOW SMACK & THE DEER WENT HEAD OVER HEELS INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.:D AS I GAVE FRANK MY ARM & WE STARTED DOWN THE ROAD.HE SAID SONNY, THAT WAS THE BEST DAM SHOT I'VE EVER SEEN OR HEARD OF! I SAID "FRANK, I'VE SEEN YOU HIT A 5 GAL. PAIL AT 200 YD. OFFHAND,LAST YEAR & I WOULD SAY THAT'S COMPARABLE AS THAT LITTLE BUCK CAN'T BE MORE THAN 70 YD". HE TUGGED ON MY SLEEVE, AND THAT'S WHEN I NOTICED THE TEARS OF LAUGHTER RUNNING DOWN HIS CHEEKS."MAYBE SO JONNY, BUT I TOOK MY SCOPE COVERS OFF FIRST!"
HE HUNTED UNTIL THEY TOOK HIS DRIVER'S LICENCE AWAY AFTER A GIRL SAID THE REASON SHE SLID INTO THE DITCH WAS BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO HIT HER![:'(]HE DIED THAT SPRING AT THE AGE OF 96.I THINK OF HIM QUITE OFTEN. |
RE: Your personal best???
Mine was about 8 years ago, when I lived close to a buddy who had permission to hunt several farms for ground hogs. On a bright, sunny Sunday morning around 11:00 a.m., we found out that most of the "woodchucks" were in the ground, getting a little shade for the day. There were about eight crows feeing in a field, and leaning on the truck, I fired a shot at one that was in the field. With my 6MM, I aimed so that there was daylight between the crosshairs and the crow's back. We stepped it off at 240 yards... [:o]

RE: Your personal best???

RE: Your personal best???
coyote ; 243 Rem. carbine ; 80 gr. PSP ; solid rest ; 440 yards.
when I fired , the wife said "YOU HIT HIM" [:o]!!!!! I told her thats what I was trying to do.[&:] I wasn't just shooting to be shooting."it really surprised me also though.[:o];):D I took another one at 320 yards with same gun and ammo with good rest.that one was trying to get a calf that had just been born. when I shot I could see the yote and the cow and calf in the scope all at the same time. |
RE: Your personal best???
I have a few personal best to start I killed a button buck with one shot at 375+ yards with a 150 grain PSP remington express core lokt with my trusty Rem m700 moutain rifle chambered in 308, I took the shot standing. I couldn't believe it I can't remember if I even aimed It was the last day of the season and i was pissed that it was the only deer I saw so i pointed the gun and pulled the trigger at it dropped. My other best was unexpected while dove hunting at the last second I saw a dove in the corner of my eye as I turned he was already atleast 60 yards away I fired off what I call F you shot and it fell dead to the earth. That was with some 3 inch mag steel #4's I had left over from duck season the year before, I was dove hunting on a waterfowl refuge and that was the only steel shot I had. Another personal best was a coyote I shot at 200+ yards with open sights with my cva muzzle loader. I was using a patched round ball with one 50 grain pyrodex pellet. when I retreieved the coyote I couldnt find an entrance or an exit wound except a patch of fur missing and a little blood on the top of his head the ball just bonked him on the head and knocked him out 20 minutes later the coyote came around and ran away. Another personal best of mine I shot a coyote on the run with a cci stinger 22 LR at about 70 yards the bullet went in one ear an exited out the side of his jaw. Another personal best I shot a snow goose at 120+ yards up in the air just winged him and fell like a brick to the ground the impact of hitting the ground broke its neck the shells I was using were Fiocchi 12 ga 3.5 inch T shot magnums with a velocity of 1520 fps.
Another personal best was with a compound bow I killed a squirrel at 35-40 yards I was using Rocket hammerhead mechanical broad heads just about cut the squirrel in half. |
RE: Your personal best???
Just 2 months ago...247 yds (as per rangefinder) on a gopher with my .22WMR (Savage C/W harris bi-pod)using CCI "TNT's". First shot was 1" low, second shot on the nose (literally):D. My cousin and I now are trying to break that record every weekend we go out for the little critters. We have yet to even come close. JDinAB

RE: Your personal best???
I shot my biggest deer (172" NT) at 280 yards with a .270 130 gr., and I also shot a meadow lark at 70 steps with a .22 Smith & Wesson revolver when I was 15, luckiest shot I have ever made.

RE: Your personal best???
One of the hashest or wickedest shots was with my bow.PSE compound w/XX75 2315 arrows and 1 125 gr. field point and a quiver of 125gr wasp 3 blade broadheads.
I was walking a dry creekbed chasing a nice buck when I almost stepped on a 3 1/2 foot rattlesnake.I nocked a field point and pinned the snake in the sand by his belly. Then I nocked a broadhead, just as I shot from about 3 foot away he struck at the tip of the arrow and sliced his head off except for a little piece of skin holding it on. RE: Your personal best???
Coyote shot at laser ranged 439 yards.
I used my remington 700 fvs heavy bbl. in 308 win. with leupold VXIII 3.5-10X50 scope. Shot prone position with harris bi-pod using 168 gr sierra king BTHP match hand loads. Wind was less than 5 mph. Hit behind onside shoulder and removed far side leg. |
RE: Your personal best???

|
RE: Your personal best???
Shark now that was a funny yet sad story the shot was very funny but really sad that you lost your huntin pal i think i might loose mine he has a bad back that seems to be getting worse every year i dont know how much longer he will be able to go out with me he can only walk about 20 min then he has to sit he can only sit for about 15 min then he has to move again we finally got a john boat so he can deer hunt its much easier on him than walking we might have to get him a ground blind so he can move around every 15 min when hes deer hunting then he can get his first deer he just started deer hunting in jan this year just before the end of the season

RE: Your personal best???
Above Williamposrt, PA just below the NY border I was hunting on my fathers land. He had an 80 acre field in front of the house, and I was sitting on the porch late in the first morning of buck season. This was the last year when you could only shoot bucks. As I was heating up leftover turkey in the house, I sat on the porch with my rifle and my dad talking about the mornings hunt. At the opposite end of the field, 3 does followed by a nice medium sized rack buck ran acrossed the field. Right before they got to the woods, I whistled with my fingers, and the buck stopped and stared at me broadside. My father told me not to waste the ammo, but I already had the gun on him, resting on the picnic table. I squeezed one off and the buck folded instantly, a nice 6 pointer with a 15 inch spread. I don't know how far it was, but my gun was sighted in 2" high at 100 yards, and I held an inch or two over his back when I squeezed. It was 438 paces from the porch. I used my Ruger M77 30-06 w/ 3x9 Nikon buckmaster and a 150 sierra boat tail on top of 59 grains of IMR 4831 in winchester brass. That is about the coolest one however I have shot a few running deer as well.

RE: Your personal best???
I hit a Chimpmunk in the heart at 75 yrds offhand, using my competition Anschutz with iron sights. Wasn't hunting, just practicing for some competition. That and shooting at flys, again with the competition Anschutz with iron sights, in kneeling and prone. Got them probably a good 8 out of 10 times. Can't see them with iron sights just have to look through the spoting scope to see where they were on my target and guess. Usually just see a little tiny blood spatter on the edge of the hole in the paper. One time a teammate of mine shot a fly at 50 yrds and the two wings where beside the whole. The fly was gone. Coolest and luckiest thing I ever saw.

RE: Your personal best???
Ha beat this, i just got my savage 17hmr 2 months ago, put a bushnell banner 6-24x40 on it.
my step bro and i were caln in crows in a feild. you could see for about 450 yds. there was a patch of trees at the lower end of the feild. i ranged it at about 350. a crow was way down there in the tip top of one of these trees. i made my windage and elevation adjustments. well actually i didn't make any windage adj. i put that cci TNT .17 grain bullet right where it belonged, right behind that crows ear. (if birds have ears) any way thats where i think i put it, cuz thats where the hole all the way through his head was. talk about amaized. that was the first shot i had made over 210 yds. those bilistic printoffs from hornady .com really helped.!!!! |
