coyote hunters....
i was watching a show on tv last night and the guys on it were hunting coyotes and i go to wondering, what do you do with the coyotes? you dont eat them do you? it seems like some what of a waste to just throw it away after you kill it so im curious what do you do with them?

RE: coyote hunters....
If the pelts aren't too messed up from the bullet round, we usually skin ours out and keep the hides. If you know how to fix em up right, you can sell them and get a few bucks.
|
RE: coyote hunters....
If the pelt isn't badly damaged you can get a decent price out of it. Other than that it's all population control.

Being a Taxidermist
I use most of my pelts for mounts, rugs, ect. The rest are sold to other taxidermist, or fur buyers.

RE: Being a Taxidermist
ive never actually tried to hunt a coyote but the show i watched made it look interesting and we have plenty of coyotes here so ill probably try it but i think selling fur here is illegal unless you have a trapping lisence which i dont and i have no need for it but i might just use the skin for something of my own. anyone get the cabelas home catalog? they have a coyote skin comforter in there for $10,000 and thats not a typo
|
RE: Being a Taxidermist
No thanks on the comforter 10 G's is a lot to pay to cuddle up to a dog.......heck if you guys want to save money I can find you dogs to cuddle with for say.............250.00. Heck for an even 500 you could have a 2 dog night![8D]

RE: Being a Taxidermist
unfortunatly it appears i threw the catalog away but it was a cabelas and it was just stuff for in your house and they had a coyote and a fox comforter i think they were both from canada and i though they were really nice and got to reading and then saw the price tag $9,999.99 i couldent believe they would even list something like that in there catalog i personally dont know anyone who could afford that or if they could that would wanna spend that thats a good used truck or boat right there or even an older used truck and a boat thats more then i paid for my last 3 trucks combined

RE: coyote hunters....
well here on the farm we kill them as varmits, but we really only do it because we dont like them because the eat baby rabbits and stuff.... its really fun too;) When u shoot them for that reason you have to leave them there but we usually just throw them into the hog compost we have on our farm...i think its a waste but i dont know how to skin them or anything[&o]

RE: coyote hunters....
Kill em all, i hate em here in ohio, they eat the turkey eggs outta the nest every year, i think im going to hunt them this year. What year do u hunt coyotes?
|
RE: coyote hunters....
Coyotes are shot on sight here in Mod 70 land. We don't hunt them we just see a lot of them feeding cows. We carry a rifle in every pickup just for shooting songdogs. The only good coyote is a dead coyote.
|
RE: coyote hunters....
we have alot of them here but i dont know of a single person here who actually goes out hunting for them most people just shoot them if they see them and i see alot walking down old logging roads out in the woods so i figured i might give it a shot here sometime

RE: coyote hunters....
I stuck a deer last year and gave her an hour to die. When I started tracking her the blood trail was decent for about 50yds, then got really wide and tons of blood and hair. I knew something wasn't right. Dang yote's drug her off and partially ate her within one hour of me sticking her with my arrow.
Since then it's open season on them. Here in NC you can kill all you want year round! |

Course being in the city doesn't help much, i can't stand city life [:'(] |

![]() Here is a GOOD coyote. The young female coyote responded to a diaphragm call done very softly. On the average, one coyote will be responsable for about 20 deer killed per year. Decrease the coyotes and increase the deer herd. Good Hunting... from Varmint Al ![]() |
RE: coyote hunters....
You know guys, some of you talk like the coyote is about to wipe out every other living creature on earth. Some of you say
Kill em all, they eat the turkey eggs outta the nest every year The only good coyote is a dead coyote. On the average, one coyote will be responsable for about 20 deer killed per year The coyote has been hunted, trapped, poisoned, airrial gunned, run over, chased by dogs and shot at by many for years, but yet they flourish!! All I can say is "Thank God", because they are the one critter that I love to hunt most, and they have proven to be too tough to hunt for many. It's sad to hear guys that don't at least sell the hides. Heck, concidering this last winter, you could sell a coyote, hide still on the carcuss for $20 -$25 and put up the furs and get in the $50 range, it is sad to hear that many don't concider them worth the time. The only guys I can understand having a real issue with coyotes are the farmers/ranchers that loose farm animals to them on a regular basis. After all, it does affect the income of those familys. But the rest of us, need to open our eyes and see them for the cunning predator that has simply learned how to survive!! LONG LIVE THE COYOTE!!! |
RE: coyote hunters....
I got access to about 6000 acres of prime hunting area because of the coyotes killing the cows and calves when they were being born. I have saved the ranchers a lot of money by helping to protect their livestock. I suggest most people to learn coyote calling so they can also gain access. I also like to help protect the deer herd near my mountain cabin. Here is a pull quote from my web pages:
A VERY FINE LINE.... I am very careful to only "control" the ground squirrel population. I have to walk a very fine line. If I shoot too many, they might not survive and the field will be barren. If I leave too many in the field, the rancher might use poison and kill them all. A surviving population of ground squirrels is a good thing and besides, I don't want to work myself out of a job. The same goes for coyotes. |
RE: coyote hunters....
Hunting coyotes is the only hunting i do and i do love hunting yotes. When i lived in n fla. i would give them to my uncle in alabama he trapped alot.Sometimes i would just let them lay.Now i live in nashville and hunt small farms and ranches.I dont know any trappers in the area yet so i live them for the land owners to do what they want with them. Some people save the hids some let them lay i think you should do as you want too no right or wrong way.
Rustyolranger i have killed probably 30 or so yotes over in calhoon co.over 200 in washington and jackson co.I was raised in campbellton fla on a farm.I started hunting yotes in that area in the mid to late 80's.I never ran into another soul there hunting yotes i had pretty much all the yote hunting land i could ever hunt in a life time.Drop me a pm might find out we know eachother or know some of the same people. Varmint AL when i first got a computer a few years ago your site was the first place i found.I did not know any other yote hunters and learned what i know from trial and error(lots of error) Your site gave me some new ideas and let me know that i was not alone. As time goes by there are more and more people coming to yote hunting most are seasonal weekenders. So thanks for the site and the time you put into it. I finally took your advise and made up the cards starting to pay off now as time goes by THANKS again. |
RE: coyote hunters....

![]() Mother's cries scare the coyote away as it tried to drag the 3-year-old from his porch. This happened last week in Simi Valley. Here is the story: Click here: http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/U..._040609-1.html |

RE: coyote hunters....
Just wanted to say a few things about that coyote attack and the additional Mountain lion attack mentioned in that news item.
I really feel for that young child and his mother. Damn shame that the Liberals in Kalifornia won't allow a man to protect his home and family without going through the inquisition for a gun permit. I read an interesting article about a coyote/pet attack here in Florida. I think it was the West Coast area, in a county where firing a gun within city limits can get get you jail time. The pet owner watched as the coyote ran down the street with her pet in his mouth. Big Thanks to Varmint Al - for a very informative web-site. It makes this new coyote hunter's heart sing when I hear the voice of experience. |
RE: coyote hunters....
ive herd of several coyote attacks over the past few years on peoples pets and i think a few on childeren but i can remember at least 3 where a coyote or pack of coyotes has attacked someones pet in there yard and a at least 1 of them some woman beat the coyote off her little dog

RE: coyote hunters....
Varmit Al,
I owe you a very big Thank you!! I took your advice from your website about predator hunting, went & talked to a few farmers/ranchers/land owners it opened up a lot of private land for me to hunt on.......not just predators either! |
RE: coyote hunters....
I actually saw an yote today when i out chasing rabbits with my bow (got easy shot that i missed, grrr) but it was too far away from me to take an shot. It was un-a$$ing the area and was an good 80 yards away from me. At first i thought it was an dog but it stopped long enough for me to get a good look at it.

RE: coyote hunters....
A fews years back I was bow hunting in southern missouri the day of the hunt I sat for hours wondered why I didnt see any deer since the night before while scouting I watched a whole herd walk past my stand. But then just as i was having that thought a coyote walks out of the brush to my left I shot at him but missed then when he took off running a moutain lion came out of my right and intercepted the fleeing coyote. What a sight that was kinda scary too, But thats why there was no deer around. After figuring out do I stay in my stand or make a run for the pick up , I was pretty scared being armed with only a bow I didnt exactly feel like wrestling with a big cat. I made a run for the truck then came back with my buddy who stood guard with a 12 ga loaded with 00 buck shot. while I retreived my treestand. then we got the hell out of there.

RE: coyote hunters....
I made a run for the truck |
RE: coyote hunters....
Coyotes don't decrease deer or turkey populations. We've seen that in the past 40 years both deer and turkey populations have exploded across the country. In fact, predation causes prey populations to increase in the long term. But this isn't Population Dynamics 101 so I'll stop there.
If you want any reason to kill coyotes at least be educated about it. The reason to control coyote numbers is to help foxes, endangered birds and endangered small mammals (like Pygmy Rabbits). Fox populations have decreased substantially almost everywhere they occur in conjuction with coyotes. |
